Thread: Favourite 22 magnum ammo.

Shooting Red Necked wallaby and Possums last night with the standard winchester 40 grain jhp load . Projectiles punched straight through the chests of everything , even the biggest roos. They died but ran before doing so. Wondering if a more explosive load such as the 30 grain v max would be better for on the spot kills or are these critters too solid for the varmint pills . What do you 22 mag guys use ?

Haven't got a magnum anymore but the 30g vmax were very accurate and killed very well on hares and possums. Give them a try.

Youve got nothing to loose but the price of a box... the difference between a 50grn nornal cup n core and a 50grn vmax is unreal in .223 cant see it being much less dramatic in the magnum.

Have used both the Winchester 40 gr and Hornady 30 gr over the years , 20 years ago the Winchesters were not consistant in my old magnum but the new Winchesters are magic, they group well in my new rossi.
The Hornady 30 gr are the bomb they are super accurate and pretty devastating when they get to their target.
Either load will get the job done no fuss .

Hornady 30 grain but if you want a 40 grain fiocchi is the one to use

CCI TNT with the explosive heads has to be the best stuff out there for sure!

Has a much better BC than the 30 gr loads, still explosive but I got better penetration with them than I did with the Hornady 30gr V max.
by 100 yards the 33 gr is going faster with more energy than the 30 gr V-max.

nb, actually the BC is also better than the 40 gr stuff as well.
Rem 33 gr BC=0.136 while most of the 40 stuff is only 0.115 and the 30 gr stuff is 0.085.
So by 100 yards it has more velocity and energy than the 40 gr stuff as well

When i had my 22mag ftx critical defence ammo is what I used to use hornady I think. It was quite a few years ago now so not sure if its still around.

30 V MAX or CCI segmented

Remington 33gr.
Then 30 gr vmax

I have been using the CCI 30gn vmax.
My Ruger 77/22 shoots them very accurately.

Getting expensive though, I can reload .222 for the same price.

Have used Winchester JHP 40gr, Hornady V Max 30gr and CCI Maxi Mag 40gr JHP over the years shooting wallabies and rabbits and hares. I now only use The CCI Maxi Mag for everything, most accurate in my rifles, has less issues with jamming or emptys sticking in chamber after cases split (Winchester was worse for this) and seems to kill well on everything.
Might be marginally dearer than the winchester but is well worth it in my opinion.
