The madness over this is nothing new. In a town up our way they had a problem with Feral cats killing wildlife as they do. The SPCA arranged for a group of cat lovers to feed the strays and quieten them down. They them trapped them, ex sexed them and let them go again. Back out into the environment killing most things that move.
One funny story that comes to mind is I stayed with a mate once at his mother's place in a semi-rural town. She was always having a problem with stray cats and had a trap set for them. I asked her what she did with them once she caught them, she said, well I can't shoot them now I'm in town so she had a cover she put over the trap, poshed the trap up against the exhaust of her car, sealed it and turned on the key and gassed the cats.
I has to ask, does it work, she replied "oh yes buy I might have to make a bigger garden out back as I have already buried 27 of them in there. I had a look at thew trap and cover and it was quite a set up.
A friend told me of when his father was a farmer, any cats were welcome in the hay barn but if he caught a tom it was put headfirst into his gumboot and a quick flick of the knife desexed them and shake it out of the gumboot at arms length. Same idea but a bit quicker.
