I think they are a bit of grey area.....best check regulations.
Jeez how the world has changed MD. In Te Whetu back in the fifties and sixties, my paternal grandfather used to gather up feral kittens, put them in a hessian sack with a brick and biff them into the swamp.
And here is me always having been lead to believe that drowning was a good death. I guess that none of us living beings know if there really is such a thing.
I've always found they are just a pain to shoot in cage. If the wires arnt in way, the cat rarely sits still when a barrel goes close to it.
By the time ya get a shot it would be drowned. Walk past trough drop it in goes strait to bottom. Inhales water just about strait away stops moving in way less time than it spends freaking out at you going to get a rifle trying to get bead on it. In my experiance any way.
One way, the most effective way of taking away wild species of their natural capability is feed them by human, same principle apply to humans you, me, everybody. That `s why there are many notice boards saying: DO NOT FEED THE XXX. Right, who do you actually shoot and kill? Old men `s last peaceful days, the childhoods with full of colors without bloodshed....
Buy that logic cats would never have gone feral as they were brought in as pets being fed.
As for elderly ppl, I'm currently parked up down the south island heading further south to the rabbit areas. Elderly gentleman and his wife pulled up, got talking first thing he said when I said was heading Central to shoot rabbits and find work was don't forget the feral cats.
There are quite a few traps around nelson lakes like this one. Pretty cool with the transmitter alerting them to when the door has closed.

Be interesting to know what the dispatching method is here, can't imagine the folks checking the trap line strolling about with .22 but maybe they do?

Normal people ???
Shoot anything they see.?? It's a species specific compition.
Nah let's stick the kids on grand theft auto. Let them fantasise about shooting people and commiting crime. Then punish the gun owners when they decide to get an illegal gun and live out thier game fantasy
Teaching children responcable use of guns and learning the reality of cause and effect are wrong? Harmful in some way?
From the police Web site.
Anyone aged 18 or older can possess and use an airgun. Anyone under 18 years of age may use an airgun if they hold a New Zealand Firearms Licence or they are under the "immediate supervision" of a firearms licence holder or a person aged 18 or older.
So where's the young kids just running around shooting willy nilly?
Laws for domestic cats.
There are no laws about this, but the SPCA and Forest & Bird have guidelines for responsible cat ownership that include desexing cats that aren't intended for breeding, putting bells on cats to help warn birds and discourage hunting, and keeping your cat inside at night.
So if your cat is nowhere near your house, isn't visably marked are you a responsable cat owner.
You can shoot someone's pet for worring sheep or get it put down.
I agree with the bell part very much, even just very small bell only can sounds very little, but birds will get away long before their killing range from whatever.
Cats hater, cats lover, birds lover and those so called experts, scientists living on govt. budgets from tax payers actually can work together for the bigger picture.
The feral cats issue as well for other killing like dropping K5, in my humble...it `s all the same, behind it just gain and pain, and we as commoners only can touch the P, never the G.
In reality, if I put in 500,000 dollars into R&D, development of ecosystems friendly approaches away from current main studies, I can get at least one million dollars funds from govt, yes I contacted with them for a year, just....if you know me. And if I do further with local council it will be another two million or three, and if I bring up some technology, guess what I will get millions investments. But, in reality....I will need hired guns anyway, and I will live with it of what I do for the rest of my life.
@Rushy……..mate..the Sunlight soap crowd is going to show up at yr place tomorrow and wash your mouth out!!
…….my bet is that its been washed out a few times and you actually like the taste…….Baaaaawhahahahahahahhahahahahahaha
Just another reason why comps like this should be encouraged

DOC website:
Dogs
Dogs frequently kill adult kiwi and can cause catastrophic declines in local populations.
All dogs, regardless of size, breed, training or temperament are potential kiwi killers. A dog can kill a kiwi by just giving it a playful push.
In Northland, the life expectancy of adult Northland brown kiwi has been reduced to just 14 years on average, due to dogs
Weka are classed endogenous through dna.
Weka are known to kill rats and mice.
Weka have been sujested as a farmed food source.
Weka have been removed from islands where they are trying to establish endangered birds due to its preditory behaviour.
What sort of argument is don't control one type of introduced pest that is killing native because it controls another type of introduced pest that is no where as destructive to native.
They both need controlling. And many more.
I actually have no idea who the person is who wrote the artical, but don't think the title that she has under it is any form of indication that she either knows what she is talking about or gives her rediculous reasoning any merit.
Just my view.
We've got a bunch of Timms traps (for possums) on trees and I put some beef offal in them hoping for some cats but didn't get any. Thinking about using some carp, anyone had success with a different bait?
Yeah. There are quite a few cat traps around the area. Even up past lake head. They are required to be checked once triggered. Unfortunately, the majority of the triggers are from Weka and hedgehogs but there are still a lot of cats being caught. From memory around 8 in the last month. General method of dispatch is a .22 but depending on what else is happening in the area the 300BLK has been used too.

My experience with cats [which is limited] is fresh 1/4 hare or rabbit or duck carcass with feathers on and also scattered in and around the trap is my go to bait.. I have tried smoked fish, fresh fish, and many more lures but I know what catches for me. Cam Speedy would say 1/3 of the bait in the trap , 1/3 around close to the trap and 1/3 scattered around up to 20m away... Hopefully Time out will chip in
Went to Cam Speedy's talk here in New Plymouth just this week. Most of it I'd heard before but picked up some really good tips.
His point about predators being tuned in to different food sources, he said that at the moment, any that are near duck shooting spots will be tuned into them where they get hold of wounded or non-retrieved ducks. So duck carcasses at the moment near these sorts of areas will make for really good bait.
The best way to make people keep pet cats in at night is to make it legal for Chinese restaurants to serve cat
On a resent trip to Stewart Island a deer was shot close to camp so gutted it & put entrails into a fish bin with a piece of lung on the hook of the cage trap. We left the bin for 2 nights before burial at sea & both nights some thing had a go at the waste.3rd night cat was caught
you need to open up the head hole quite a bit before cats will stick their heads in they dont like their whiskers touching anything
also a tiny bit of bait out in front to give a slight taste ups your catch rate
live capture is a better way with cats then at least you can assess if it is a domestic
Some form of progress is better than none. Hope it goes well.

was something on news earlier...PETA are going to gate crash a hunting competition in next few weeks.... ho hum.
Sounds like it wasn't going very well for them, on the news it was reported kids were taunting them with carcasses and telling them to "go eat a carrot" - organizers said SAFE/PETA were screaming "murderers" which the kids didn't take kindly too :)
edit: here we go: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/north-...IYL6C4KOZLWYE/
Well maybe they should be informed of how our govt gets rid of said pests and they can feck off and protest at the beehive about 1080 which is way cruelly and indiscriminate than someone identifying their target and humanely (generally) dispatching them with a firearm
Matt spoke really well on the radio and got some good points across.
https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/progr...ts-controversy
the fellas did well to hold their tongue and leave protesters alone...mate attempted to talk reasonably to them...he is VERY good at doing that..but they just didnt want to know... good on the kids.
sounds like a good amount of meat was processed and off to charity too.
Didn't sound that flash to me.
Think next one should advertise to public a differnt place than actually is. Then the protesters can stand around all day not bothering anyone.
Good for kids to see that there are always opposing views I guess.

If you cannot read it some highlights:
There's a whole lot of 'doesn't add up' in there for me, from where the cat was shot to the bullet and calibre.Quote:
An elderly couple in north Canterbury fear for their safety in their own home after their pet cat was killed by a seemingly rogue hunter.
They believe the cat, Tom, was shot on their property, near the Okuku River with the incident only occurring a week after the region’s cat-killing competition.
While the tournament ended the previous weekend and an organiser says it’s unrelated, the family are concerned hunters have continued the practice.
Tom was found late Thursday night covered in blood, suffering from a gunshot to his shoulder blade that shattered the bone.
...
Tom was rushed to an Oxford vet where it was confirmed he’d been shot by a firearm that used bullets larger than a 22 calibre rifle.
...
“The size and nature of the entry and exit wounds...lead me to believe...either a calibre larger than .22 Rimfire was used [a .22 Magnum CF] or it was not a hollow point bullet [used in most pest control ammunition],” the vet wrote in a statement.
‘Tom never went further than the trees’. What a load of rubbish.

thats the 3rd time Ive seen the 10km thing..... if thats correct 99% of land where a person will hunt is not suitable ..now 2km is a long way from a house and even that would surverly restrict where hunting is permissible...Ive shot a deer on DOC controlled land while listening to a fella mow his lawns..a good 7-800 yards away.
In France, any cat further than 30m from a duelling, is considered a stray cat that can be shot.
Wouldn't put it past the old folks that they put the bullet into their cat themselves..... just to cause a stir.........
Here's an interesting stat, I wondered how many cats are run over (versus shot).
There are no stats in NZ, but they keep them in the USA. Every year, out of 76 million cats - 5.4 million are run over with a 97% mortality rate (source US National Traffic Safety Administration). Note the population is a little on the high side of estimates.
There are estimated 1.219 million pet cats in NZ, so if we extrapolate the numbers above that comes out to 84 thousand cats getting run over each year (thats probably a little low given the higher population est above). That's 230 cats run over a day.
...one cat shot because owners let it roam, versus 230 cats A DAY run over because owners let them roam. Anyone else see the root problem here?
