Cover your ass. Save yourself the grief, get a permit for anything you import.
    NZ Customs (generally) are numptys.
If the AO will issue one, I asked about one for the lower Im bringing in and Wellington's AO said no yoou dont need one. However he may now be caving in on that which worries me, I'll try and see him today.

BTW the trigger isnt a select fire trigger and the USA dont care about exporting it as a part, but its over $100US so export permit is needed.

From brownells, "Regulated items would be barrels, barrel liners, actions, receivers, frames and cylinders. Also brass/bullets.
Triggers are gun component parts, they are not regulated."

    New Zealand
    Post code xxxx
    Telephone number 0064 4 xxxxx

    <date> 2014

    To whom it may concern.

    Dear Sir/Madam,

With reference to an import permit for gun parts from the USA.

I talked to and confirmed with the New Zealand Police and they state that because I wish to import only Category A type firearm parts and already hold a Category A firearms licence to use these types of firearms, I do not require, and they will not issue an import permit to New Zealand for the parts listed in the purchase order.

    In addition please note that,

    a) Any category A firearm parts should have no problems passing through New Zealand Customs.
    b) These parts will be for my personal use only in competition use, practice or testing for such events.
    c) As per USA form DSP-83 10-2005 no part will be exported out of New Zealand.
    d) I am the end user.

    Yours faithfully,

So open a Brownells account, order the part. It will go on hold.

NB however if it isnt urgent Brownells is doing some specials over the next few weeks, a trigger may come up cheaper.

Then do the paper work and send it via snail mail, I use a 215mm x 105mm envelope and that is $2.50NZ in postage.

Allow $35US for postage and $10 for the state department fee. So you could get a total value of about $280US and avoid GST this end as long ie as its less than $400NZ when it arrives incl postage. I'd suggest filling up the value with small parts like gas rings etc to get the best value.

I agree with you. Unfortunately, what you appear to have missed in my previous comment is that it is the NZ Police Policy to NOT issue a permit for something which does not legally require one. If you have an AO who is either ignorant of this policy or is just "a good bloke" and issues you one anyways, you are lucky.

As Steven mentioned, some AOs don't even issue permits for items which NZ Police says that you need one for.
A permit is not required for parts of a sporting rifle or shotgun other than the complete upper action (upper and/or lower receiver for AR/AK types).

While it is always prudent (and the right thing anyways) to be polite to government officials, sometimes you do need to be assertive and enlighten them on what the law says, not what they think it says.

I'd call for a review on the training and education of AOs but I'm sure I would just be labeled a "whinging ungrateful git".

@Koshogi actually I'd suggest its NZcustoms officers that need the education. Certainly Ive had far more trouble with customs officers over 30 years, then the Police by far, too many of them are arrogant, lazy pricks frankly.

    Hi Steven,
Yes please send it through. One can't have enough information when it come to importing gun parts these days. Stupid thing is I already have an AR15 so getting a trigger up grade shouldn't be such a big deal. Anyway must jump through the necessary hoops!
    E-Mail for me is mloeffen@slingshot.co.nz
    Thanks Steven
    Cheers V Man
