    good nature counters

    Hi guys
    I've just had some good nature traps arrive 5 x A24s (rat and stoat) & 2 x A12's (possum)
I was wanting to purchase counters for my record keeping so got one at farmlands today for $55 - holy smoke I'm almost thinking flag the counters and put the $$ towards more traps!?
I'm interested if any of you have experience with the counters... are they reliable, worth the $$, my farther reckons they only work when he test fires the trap??
    Interested in your replies.
    Cheers

I got an A24 for a test and the gas cartridges are something they need to work on. The only way to test the cartridge is to trigger it and i reckon the best thing would be a pressure guage fitted to it or a refillable type cartridge that could be removed and shaken to test what is in it.The guage could be something like that fitted to fire ext.If you are good with spanners something could be made up.

The counter on our A24 has not been 100% reliable, but pretty good.
If you had a productive spot, the counter will show that the 24 odd charges have been exhausted prior to a calendar gas change. Potentially saving you having an unarmed trap sitting there.
We only get a few, so the counter also lets me know whether to change the lure only, or the gas as well.
With or without the counter, the thing is the ducks nuts. The satisfaction you get seeing the total ticking over one by one is probably worth the $55.

    @Feather or Shoot
I brought A24 Rat 5 Pack for $747.50 from the good nature web site and they did not come with counters.
I do see that for $199 you'll can buy a single A24 Rat & Counter kit. So it seems $5 better off on this option.
I'm thinking I'm gunna buy one more counter, put some cameras on them and see what happens.
    Cheers.

Hope they work well @kukuwai - I have never used counters on the seven I have at the farm - just keep putting new gas bottles on every few months - they are cheep
I have got eleven new A24s with counters ready to put out at the Park - just trying to assess manpower, tracks and gaps between tracks that can’t be trapped on the tracks - just wanting to put them in shit holes that are hard to access
I am thinking that I will mount them on 400mm long pieces of 75*25 mounted at about 30 degree slope - I reckon that rats like tunnels and ramps and don’t like looking above themselves
I have had a lot of success with ramps using A24s and standard traps - I think that the one in the picture is a bit steep but easy to change by clipping on a lower fence wire - I see that GN are now offering a plastic ramp as an accessory - strange - when I suggested it a couple of years back they said that vertical mount was the way to go - the picture shows how my lure bottles mixed with olive oil and aniseed keeps on dribbling - the new GN lure dispensers will push out the lure daily
Hope you can show us some pictures - good luck with the A24s and counters

Can you use air pistol cartridges?
So these should be safe to dogs as they shouldn't be able to get there head up there?
Will the rat one do mice?
I might try one around home.

    good start

So far I have only deployed two of the good nature traps 1 x A12 with no counter and 1 X A24 with counter. I put them out on Sunday just past. Had a quick look at them today &.....

This guy was easy to see under the trap so didn't need a counter really. As far as setting/placement goes I have put it higher than they recommend so as not to get my springer spaniel.
Also I put heaps of good nature possum paste inside the shroud and some flour and aniseed on the tree trunk too !!

    Next for the A24

There was a mouse under it and yes the counter showed 1 so all good @ Bully they do catch mice, not sure about the air pistol cartridges but they are low down so very hard to get a dogs head up in them

@time out The ones I have, have the new ALP which seems to be a good idea but I reckon that your onto a cracker with the aniseed and olive oil dribbling. And the ramp I am certainly gunna try that too as it opens up more setting options. Also got me thinking about putting them in shit country, man you are full of good ideas

    Cheers !!

@bigbear Currently I just have the rat lure in them, but its easy to change to the stoat one at any stage.

Good thread, we are moving and the place has possum problems, lemon orchard on one side and fig orchard on the other, plenty of traps about, and one of these for possums, might look at more as don't want my cats caught in traps/cages...

I checked the A24 again today there was no sign of the mouse from a couple of days ago.
It was replaced by a rat

Just an update on these goodnature traps and counters for you fellas.

All the counters on the A24's are working well showing a total of 31 strikes between them, with 20 of those strikes coming in the month of june. They seem to be very effective on mice with sometimes 2 or 3 carcases lying beneath

I have cameras set up on two of them and have found some interesting things... One of them has regular visits from a harrier hawk. There is often nothing under the trap even though the counter shows 10 and I have good night pictures of both rats and mice Guess its an easy feed for him !!

Both A24s have had visits from possums which is interesting as neither of them are baited with the possum lure they both have the rat lure in them. However the ALP (automatic Lure Pump) seems to be working well as I have sometimes noticed a fresh drop of lure on the ground beneath the trap.
