I havent used one hunting but my uncle had one on a slug gun and we could shoot a can from the hip shot after shot. Cant be that bad if its on a slug gun with vibrating and so on
I had one on an air pistol once, dad got me to cull his chickens out one night, head shots at 5m. Not sure on longer ranges though.
I use a green laser. Really good especially on running targets.
Also have tried a laser designator instead of a scope mounted torch. Fantastic!!
They take a while to warm up and give the big green blaze, leave it on all the time to beat the warm up and it will kill the battery. They do have other uses though, if you are intolerant of a certain type of flying insect and feel the need to encourage it to leave........ I make no comment on weather that would be right or wrong to do though.
Laser pointer or laser illuminator?
If the latter, had a play with one one night while chasing wallabies.
It was scope mounted and hooked up to pressure switch.
Very tight beam, maybe 3-4m at 100m, so no good for scanning, but the approach we used was to walk along with the led spotlights until we saw something, then kill the lights and line up with just the laser to make the shot. The green light didn't seem to concern the animals, so you'd watch the wallaby happily feeding away while you lined up the shot.
Downsides were that it took a second or two for your eyes to translate from the white light to the green, and it also reduced contrast which made it a little more difficult to actually find what you were looking for through the scope. Not overly cheap either.
Was impressed with how undisturbed the animals were when lit up with it, also the tight beam could be considered a plus in some settings. Capable of plenty of range, too.
May end up shelling out for one, if I can't find a decent scope-mounted torch setup I like.
like this, pretty bright small beam, have lit up the bush out to a kilometer with it..
its got turrets on it to fine tune the aim. likely to be more of a toy than useful i think but il take it out and use it in conjunction to a sn6 to have a look

Have found them good from the back of a truck.
Also handy thing to mount to the main spotlight so the light guy can point out the bunny he can see that no one else can
Got a Nikko Laserking scope on my Marlin, with built in laser just activates off a pressure switch that's on the side of the stock.
Very handy for difficult angle shots and at night on possums, esp for showing their position to the other shooters. And handy at night for rabbits where a v quick from the hip shot works a treat
+1 for the laserking i use one on my .17 ackley hornet ;-P
I use a laser pointer on the floor in my kitchen, keeps the dog's entertained
I picked one up for a play a while ago (pointer, not designator) Best distance so far is 5 km.
I was shining it at the local scout group camping on a farm and the scout leader wouldn't believe that I was at home when doing it
Trademe logan. But I think the rules may have changed regarding lasers now.
I have to admit that I was amazed too. I thought all they could see was the beam against the black cloudy sky, but my mate told me on the uhf that the spot was being projected onto the tent fly clear as. I measured it of using wams and it was almost bang on 5km
I see.. Theres nothing on Trademe now because of those new regulations! Wonder if customs would pick up on it if I ordered one from aliexpress.. :(
How powerful/what colour/cost is your one?
my understanding is it mainly just laser pointers. You still may be able to get the laser rifle mounted ones.
I got one of these last year before they clamped down on them and it would do 5km no probs

From the reading I did when the law was passed, you're still able to bring them in if they're designed specifically for mounting on a rifle, and/or include fittings for doing so, such as adjustment turrets or rail-mounts, etc.
You might just have to be careful to choose one with wording on the box like 'night shooting rifle mount' etc.
Use a laser with NV goggles but prefer a scope.
I got mine with turrets and rail mounts from hawkersupplies in chch. Mounts on the front rail nicelyAttachment 27832
I've got quite a few of the Glock pistol lasers all over the place (red dot). I have one mounted to a 12 gauge and it's really good - it's range is much further than the shotgun's. I made the setup below on Friday - it's last year's 10/22 in ATI stock with 2.5-10x40 illuminated scope with side-mounted laser. Also a couple of focusing CREE U2 LED torches up front. The weather has been too crappy to test it so far but hopefully this weekend. The laser on the 10/22 is more of a gimmick but the one on the 12 gauge is very effective and I recommend it. I use a boresighter to line up the shotgun laser.

Govt are getting a bit techy over these now. You have to apply for an import license if the power is too high (can't remember how high, will need to check). I'm after a powerful green laser to fit on to our thermal imagers so that the beam can be used to act as a location designator for land and sea rescue.
What kind did you use for the 5km scouts? I'm sure this would be sufficient.

All that is written on mine is the name Paisen. I would hazard a guess that you could source them from Ali express etc .
I paid around $35 on trademe, but this was before the changes
