Last nights efforts

Started shooting last night at around 7pm, ended up at 0500 this morning. Long night but the effort was worth it, 100 pair of rabbits for the local processer and 6 fox cubs, just because.

I use a CZ 453 22lr for the rabbits and close in foxes, and a Zastava M85 custom 20/222 for the longer shots. The fox cubs have only just started appearing in the last week or so, but from the numbers Im seeing they will be pretty thick on the ground over summer. We are going through a pretty dry spell at the moment, bugger all green feed and not that much dry stuff either. Hopefully there is enough to keep the rabbits growing, till I catch up with them that is;)

Interesting that you say 100 pair of rabbits instead of 200 rabbits. Do you sell by the pair for any particular reason?

No particular reason that I know of, its the way its been for as long as I can remember. A traditional thing I spose.

the guy from the house in the photo came rocketing up, thought I was from PETA ha ha, after that was sorted out we had a chat, 53 foxes in 3 nights in a 5k radius. Got me and a mate excited about a fox trip. After looking into the red tape needed to get guns into oz, and the difficulty posed by not going through a guide the idea went in the dumpster and we went to Fairlie shooting wallabies instead.

Shitballs! 50plus foxes in a 5k radius would have to be a significant problem!

Why not head shoot? or are they shot on the run? Great effort.

Re the foxes,As I remember he said they were whistled in and spotlighted with an infra red setup like night vision I think. Rifle was a savage .223. You get $20 per headskin from the state govt, used to be for tails but that changed several years ago.

Mate all the rabbits are head shot, or they are worthless to me. I make my living selling them and they wont take any shot lower than the high neck due to bruising. Foxes I just shoot in the big bit as Im not into taking the skins, we don't get a bounty here in NSW, and I like the splatter effect as well. they are also in competition with me for rabbits, so I guess they have to go.

Marty, yeah that photo made all the papers over here, or the ones that would print it that is;), A mob over here called the Invasive Species Council, read that as ignorant mad Greenies, say that shooting has no effect on numbers. Their main trouble seems to be that they have for years relied on their choice of using 1080 poison baits, and they are too stubborn to admit they are wrong. But I guess you blokes know what its like trying to convince some government department they are not as correct as they like to think they are.

Meant to add, if any of you fellas are ever over here and can get out my way, Id be happy to take you out for a go at some foxes, other commitments permitting.

Do you have to skin and gut the rabbits or take them in whole? That is a lot of work.

Our daughter bought an old Fox fur jacket two summers ago in Tairua for $45.00.... in excellent condition, labelled from a London maker, fully lined etc.
She wears it sparingly in London for special social occasions, and was a bit cautious at first with all the 'anti fur ' stuff in mind.
She's only ever had positive comments and been offered serious £ for it...... so I guess the lunatics haven't taken over the asylum yet.

And she's seen them regularly at night in town, she's close to the old Crystal Palace Common which has a few in residence.

I just have to take the guts out from liver to pelvis, piss bag and of course the nuts out of the bucks, then pair them up so they are close to the same size in each pair. I do work in the processing plant here in town on Mondays and sometime Tuesdays, Ill see if I can dig up some photos and put them up for ya

Shoots pretty well with Nosler 32gn BT, 21.6gn ar2207, rem 7 1/2 primers in Lapua Match grade 222 brass necked down.

I have since dropped the load down to 21.0, shoots just as good, there are 5 in that little hole. Another one for the wallet. I tried 39gn Sierra, they shot nearly as good with 5 shots going into 3.8th inch, but I decided to keep on with the 32gn bullets as they shoot flatter and faster out to 250 mts or so. 32gn Hornady Zmax shoot to the same poi, and they are even cheaper than the noslers at 88 bucks for 500. Everyone over here seems to be going mad on the Sierra 39 gners, I have seen prices around 50 bucks a hundred, if you can get them. I have another 1000 Zmax on order, that should just about last this barrel out.

Yeah, its funny how things work out like that. The rifle I started with was one of the older M85s that came out in the 80s, very plain shitty factory plastic stock, the barrel was totally rooted, it had been one of those farm guns that sat behind the ute seat and was never looked after. Chunks gouged out of the stock, half rusty, really the only bit that was any good was the action, it was a perfect candidate for a custom job. For a hundred bucks I couldn't pass it up. I have a newer 223 that is earmarked for a 17/222 in the next couple of weeks, as well as a 7.62x39 which will become a 22PPC in a month or so. You might get the impression that I like these actions, you are right. :thumbsup:
