    More .22LR musings

I'm not sure if anyone else will find this of benefit, but spent a little more time on the "range" with my unmodified CZ452 yesterday.

    Conclusions:

    1. Winchester subs are OK, but not as good as CCI.

    2. I've definitely had a bad batch of CCI subs. It was hard to close the bolt on them and groupings were not as good as usual with more fliers. Glad their gone!

    3. I still can't make subs work for me beyond 50 metres. It's not just the drop, it's the groupings. Happy to accept that it's my marksmanship though.

    4. Retried CCI mini-mags. What a cracking round in all senses! Point and shoot to 75 metres and good groupings, but bloody hell, what a racket. I couldn't get good groupings even with these at 100 metres, again happy to accept it's my marksmanship.

    5. Can't really chop and change between subs and mini-mags, the zero is close, but not good enough for me. I was hoping to zero the subs for 50m, use subs most of the time and keep a few mini-mags on me for when a longer shot presented itself.

I use CCI Target 40 grain Round nose solid for Smallbore.
If I do my bit, can put 4-5 pretty much through the same hole at 25 yds (old range).
Scored as per attached pic (first time ever, though have come close at 99.5 using CCI).
    Annie 1415 M54 target rifle, with 4-12 x 42 AO scope set on 11x.
Eley Club is just as consistent, so the 'nut behind the butt' can be the 'confusion' factor.

Have had some issues with the CCI being difficult to extract during a string.
I've not taken the time to measure rim thickness, but when closing the bolt, more effort is required for the 'sticky' ejection cases.
Have measured bearing surface length on Eley and CCI - CCI bearing surface is longer by approx 0.9mm.
Also loading a round and then extracting, shows longer rifling marks (deeper engagement into rifling), on the CCI than on the Eley.
Can only put that down to different manufacturing process and the tight factory tolerances in the Annie.

I can't chop & change between subsonic and supersonic either (Win Subsonic 42 max and Win PowerPoint 40) in a Remington model 581 bolt action.

Not only a shift in elevation but a similar shift in windage between the 2 loads. Both loads are superbly accurate.

Ended up sighting-in for Subsonics and if I need more firepower use a .223 or 12 ga.

I prefer subs (cci). I get good groups but don't get hung up on tiny groups any more as I have finally after years of rabbit shooting I am just interested in minute of rabbit.
This doesn't mean I am happy to wound, I always go for a clean precise kill but a well placed shot behind the shoulder does the job every time.
Swapping back and forth isn't so bad going from sub's to supersonic but coming back down the other way I find isn't so easy.
Noise is a big consideration for me, I just can't be bothered with the noise anymore and don't shoot any unsuppressed rifles anymore.

I have noticed that with the winter rabbits down here in Cromwell that they are very big and sporting thick winter pelts and the rounds aren't not as effective , the subs need to be well placed and even then they may go 20 yards before dropping.

So if the new PCNZ committee could make a promise for NZ to be predator free by 2050, your large bunnies could be 'giant' by then.

I find with my gun win subsonic with suppressor shoot to zero at 25m and then win powerpoint without suppressor are on zero at 50m so that is a good combination for me.

But both run out of "minute of rabbit" ie sub at 25m and ppt at 50m so my effective range is limited. Perhaps a 17hmr would fix that. Powerpoint kill noticeably better than sub but often I have to use sub. Dont hunt much with the 22LR recently so not claiming expertise here.

With subs if your on at 25 then you should be on again at 50 @Bagheera 4 inches low at 75.

Clearly I suspect rabbits will not be targeted and their numbers will increase, as they are pests but not predators. If we remove all the predators I suspect the bunnies will breed better than the tweeters....
