Thread: Pest control after dark with the Pard NV008/T1x 17hmr combo

Ive been out doing some night time rabbit control in an Apple orchard where they have been wreaking havoc ring barking the new trees.

The Pard seems to be a very neat wee unit and performs well for its much lower price than many other scopes designed for shooting in the dark.

Here's footage of a sneaky rabbit trying to hide that i'd already spooked with my torch (havnt got a handheld scanner as yet)




Here's a few more I got last night, longest shot was a head shot at 111 yards.

A fun couple of hours wander in the fresh night air.

Got one as well but waiting for a rail so I can mount it on my trusty 223 for a bit of fun.

I had an extended weekend away on a Deer hunting trip on private land, with the days being shorter and the nights much longer this time of year i decided to take the little T1x along as well with the Pard NV008 IR scope on it and chase some of the many hares that seem to be around on this property.

Heres a little bit of footage of the action, only my 3rd time out with the Pard, and am starting to get the hang of it, i dont have full faith in my zero as yet, hence my reluctance to take headshots and aiming for the bigger bit on most of them.

Ive now also worked out that there is much higher intensity IR light lower in the image, so i'll shim the unit up some more and rezero to better align the crosshair with the brighter IR throw.

Its alot of fun, the Pard NV019 handheld IR scanner was working well too, it just arrived prior to the trip so got to give it a good test run. Even saw a fallow deer in it as it was trying to get into a deer fenced winter crop paddock.

What sort of ranges are the hares in your second video?
Do you recall how much moon was out?

That's pretty impressive image quality.

Only ranging around 50-90 yards those ones. Not much moon light at all as the weather was shit and pretty cloudy.

The Pards internal IR Laser Illuminator is pretty good to 150, and usable on larger animals to 225-250 yards in the right conditions. If you want more IR light for an even better image and to extend the range even further then you need to add an external IR Laser torch (the good ones give good image quality to 400-500 yards.

But the inbuilt IR is good enough for most of the small game pest shooting it do using the 17 HMR

First time shooting a new property last night, I'd previously checked it out in the daylight a week or so back.

Its not a big property but there were a few bunnies about, i was using the Pard NV019 Handheld IR scanner and the Pard NV008 scope.

Both seem to be working quite well. Its good being able to scan and find them without having to wave a spot light around.

Back out in the apple orchard tonight with the T1x 17hmr with the Dual Pard combo.

Got my longest rabbit with the IR thus far, 157 yards, thru the neck.

A few headshots tonight too.

A lovely still clear night tonight, a wee bit chilly at only 3 deg thou.

My NV008 scope is the non range finding model. Im not ranging the rabbits at all but you kinda get the idea of what distance theyre at by how well they show up in the IR beam, this seems to be working quite well with the trajectory of the 17hmr, on a 22 with subs i could see that the LRF model pard would be fairly essential.

Im finding the handheld pard nv019 scanner quite easy to spot them, the eye shine in the IR is quite bright, and a dead give away. Can then zoom in a bit or tighten up the IR illuminator to concentrate the IR beam and get a good target ID.

A decent thermal scanner would work even better for finding them but for the low price i paid for the Hand held IR scanner it works pretty well.

Had a fair bit of ground fog last night which made it a little harder but still quite effective obviously

Looks like some awesome kit! Have you had a play with the clip on NV007 @GWH ?

Pretty impressive set up, very effective on the hares alright.

Its working out pretty well.

No I havnt had a play with a NV007 rear add on, thats what i originally was keen on getting as well, but this NV008 came up at a reasonable price 2nd hand.

It some ways i believe the 007 add on has some advantages, the picture clarity i believe can be better using a standard optical scope with a rear IR add on.

Also the process of aligning/shimming before doing the digital zeroing on the NV008 is a bit of a hassle initially, you dont have that drama with a rear add on as its just looking thru your normal scope/reticle.

Back into one of the berry blocks tonight after dinner.

As i left home my 7 yr old lad asked if i could bring some rabbits home to make some more KFR (Kiwi Fried Rabbit) he freakin loves it.

So its a win win win.

I have fun shooting, land owner has his pests taken care of and my kids get their KFR! ;-)

I took 3 sets of hind quarters and saddles home, so that should give us a good feed of buttermilk fried rabbit.

Im scanning looking for rabbits with a handheld IR scanner (Pard NV019)

I know my way round this property pretty well, even thou it was very overcast and quite dark last night with very little moonlight i was still just able to see a little, i only switch on my headlamp on dim setting when really needed.

I believe the red light headlamps are good for that
