Peanut butter is as good a bait as you will need imo.

If you have plenty of rats i would not set the traps for the first week. I would bait the trap with a bit of pb at the entrance of the trap to encourage the rat into the box. However do not set the trap. Rats are very suspicious of new objects in there area. If you kill Bob the rat the first night and you have all Bobs mates watching some may/ will keep away from the trap as they know its dangerous. If however you have Bob and his mates going in and out of the trap for 4 or 5 days getting a free feed, then you make the trap live and whack Bob that night the other rats think whats going on here ... i know its safe because i have been in there before and they go in and get the bad news also..
