    scope for varmint shooting

I am looking at buying a scope for my 223 varmint rifle but are not sure what would be a good scope. Mainly shooting hares, rabbits and wallabies out to 250 metres. What scope are you using for varmint shooting? What magnification do you prefer?

    On my Tikka T3 223 I've got a Leupold 4-14 x 40 with Varmint Reticle ... It usually stays wound up to 14x ...

Its been a fantastic wee scope .. wouldnt hesitate to recommend it ..

    regards

4-16x44 Vortex Viper on my 223 wallaby rig. Have used it for the occasional bunny trip too.

Zoom range is right about perfect. On hunting trips I will often use the full range, min to max. Larger objective is much nicer if you're likely to be spotlighting or in low light. While spotlighting it tends to sit on 6-8 power, but will shift that up or down, as the terrain dictates.

Max-12 power class of scope is probably *okay* but I think you'll want a bit more than that, especially when trying to place your shots on a rabbit out to 250.. 14-16x is right about the sweet spot, in my opinion.

I use a 5-25x55 z5 and would not be keen to go back to the max 14 and 16 scopes I had on it beforehand.
For stretching out .223 I also find the ability to dial very handy

I've got a 4-16x40AO Tasco something that works pretty well on my wee 223. Only used it out to about 250m so far.

You want high mag if it is dedicated bunny rig. 25x is a good upper magnification but you wouldn't want it fixed. 6-24x50 is about perfect.

If its going to be used as an all purpose 4-16x50 is good

    Thanks for the replies guys.
What about having a scope with an adjustable objective? Does it make much difference?
On the Leupold website a lot of scopes have either adjustable objective or LR?

Just get a vortex viper PST 6-24x50 or sightron s3 6-24x50 and you will be right!

Both have sideparallax, sightron slightly better glass imo vortex more features like zero stop and illuminated reticle for a similar price. Both very good adjustments and both lifetime warranty.

About $1050NZD landed last time I looked.

As for you're question, you want some sort of parallax adjustment if you are getting over 14x I reckon.

Using a cheapy Mueller 8.5-25x44 on my Howa 1500 in 223, it's great for laying there and finding those pesky rabbits that just put their nose up out of the ground and no more. Cheap too now on sale at nzhunter.com only $230 odd.
