Shoot em if you can, snares can be cruel bloody things if they dont work as planned.

Agree with Cam.
Guitar strings make good snares. They have a loop in one end all ready to go just need to secure loose end to something reasonably solid, don't want them to run off with it and suffer even worse. Decent peg works.
But yeah shooting them is more humane if done correctly
I set snares all around our place as a kid and after two months or so there were no rabbits left, the population never really recovered either since the odd one that came in got shot at or scared by dogs. Hawks used to eat the rabbits before I could get to them most of the time lol.
I did this last summer and killed a fair few. I would set the snares at night after shooting then check in the morning. I seemed to only catch little ones.
I used a thin black cord for mine. Tied a bite in the end, then looped back over itself. Tied other end to a fence post for the ones under the fences and tied to a sturdy tent peg for the ones over holes.
The shorter the tail end the better really and they are pretty cruel. I often caught mine by the back leg so you arrive in the morning to a frantic rabbit, trying to pull to get out.
Is just recommend shooting really eh. Kinda cool in theory but it just didn't sit well with me.
Good luck

Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
I have done bit on rabbits years ago, and used snares very effectively on possums when running a trap line,
been in Canada the last 15 years and have a couple mates, who run trap line for a living, beaver, muskrat, mink, fisher, fox etc.
correct snare, set correctly, are very effective and quick clean killing, done wrong, they are a cruel, ugly way to die.
flexible wire works very well, small size, you can buy little lock tabs, from places like cabelas or other trapping suppliers in Canada, and USA that keep the tension on, so snare cant back off, (loosen) important to get the rabbit, to keeps its head up, and snare loop small enough, that shoulders cant pass threw,
a small stick, lump of dirt 50-75mm high, will keep head in right place.
good luck,

Ahhh crap, just Googled to see if this was legal in nz.... Looks like it is, got a temporary worker at the ski field that wants to do it, don't like the idea with my dogs running around.
Mpi says you need permission to put out leg hold traps withen 150m of a welling, presume this would apply to snares?
