    Suppressor failure

    A couple of us are in Central Otago rabbiting and my mates suppressor on his 17 HMR has split like this. He can't remember where he got it does anyone recognise the brand? There is nothing except. 17 on it. Thanks guysName:  148066346051534378953.jpg

    No it's aluminium it had camo tape wrapped around it which the gasses cut so we peeled it off to see what was going on.

    Ammonia and aluminium plus moisture equals corrosion. Duralum is better but will still get little white specks forming. This is why dpt and others reccomend taking the supressor off and airing it out. Even though its a little round the powder still produces water and ammonia in enough quantity to cause corrosion. On the bright side ammonia stops rusting on steel so the bores protected.

    Duralum is Aluminium, its an old trade name for something in the 2000 series, none of which are not good for corrosion resistance. For this something like this I would have gone 6000 series. There is also the possibility that the flutes were cut too deep and the hoop stress (due to internal pressure) was too high causing the cracking

    That's what it looks like some of the other flutes are also showing signs of failure. No one recognizes the manufacturer?
