If you have a black rabbit, that means there are a lot of rabbits there. There used to be a ratio in Central Otago when you started seeing coloureds but I forget what it is now. 1 in so many thousands for a ginger/red, 1 in so many for a black etc. I dont know if it was any such science or just what was spoken. I shot a pure white one in the hills around Alexandra in the late 80's, only one I have ever seen, tanned its skin and kept it for many years before it got too tatty. Used to see quite a few black ones down there from time to time.

Old wives tail that. I can take you to a spot where you will get a ginger every time but there's not many rabbits there, I shot maybe five or six there so far. It's genetics.
Over the last few years there's been a lot with a higher percentage of white on them.
Quite right, some areas seem to have a lot of black bunnies and others not. Shot a blonde one in Conroys gully are few years ago, very easy to see in the thyme!Quote:

Shot a rabbit once with bullet holes through its ears. The ears had being laying flat along its body. Rabbit didn’t die with that shot so I shot again and found the holes in the ears.Quote:
