Not sure if that would have been north island Dama wallaby, or south island Bennets wallaby, but either way, yes have eaten southern roo meat in the past. It was mostly edible, but it still always smelt like wallaby. Exceedingly lean too.

There are probably ways to cook it up well, but I leave it on the hill these days. Some people like it for their dogs..

tails make awesome casserole....meat makes good jerky..... steaks are ok... very lean and bland if you take young one.

Nailed a few rabbits this afternoon but the highlight was this fellow sunning himself.

@Moa Hunter when I processed them it was in the middle of a field which was quite muddy. Don't worry, this photo was when I got them home and put them straight onto the chopping board. I gave them a good rinse and clean so they weren't as grubby

So today was an unexpected but successful day. Wife and I had planned to go out to the in-laws place for the day with the main mission for me to sight in my new centrefire. As we were about to leave home I made the last minute decision to take my .22lr along "just in case".

As we were driving out, I was thinking about the group of turkeys that I found after my last recce out to their place a few weekends back. We arrived, drop my wife and kid off and I decided to shoot up the road to speak to the farmer who owns the land where I saw the turkeys. Sure enough, being the good bugger he was he said yep no problem. He told me to hop into his Paloris buggy and took me to where the turkeys were.

15 minutes later of me chasing the mob on foot I managed to knock down two birds with neck shots.

One bird after plucking feathers and gutting came to 4.4kg. The other was 2.9kg. First time plucking and gutting a bird so ended up being a bit if a hack job. Oh well. Looking forward to eating them!

Had to thread the needle a couple times today. Both magpies to the left of the blue mark.

Peacocks really know how to be an absolute menace! This mob of 3 cocks and 5 hens stayed on top of the ridge line at 200m with cows behind them for about 45 mins yesterday!

Driving thru Waioeka gorge on day at work -came around corner and bugger me a 3 year old friesan bull lying on side of road with a broken leg - went down to MOW camp around corner borrowed a 303 and went back and shot him - no sooner done that and a hough came roaring around corner scooped it up and with a big grin from me MOW mate off back to MOW camp - could only have come of a cattle truck

So they thought they could out-clever me by staying just out of range of the .17. But this time the trebly earned its keep. Casseroles much coming up!

What is that on top @Mintie ? Thermal, NV, scope, presumably you are using it in the daytime?

I have been out with a handheld thermal a few times lately in the dark. It seems that the pukekos are often all roosted together in the same tree at night.

It looks to be easy pickings at night if you were chasing them.....

Thats a Pard SA45LRF Thermal, older tech now but it's footprint suits the rifle perfectly and its still doing the job pretty well! Had it out tonight and head shooting Rats at 25m is a breeze!
