If Tararuas, take hot/cold/wet/snow gear for multi-day trips.
Plus gear as listed by all above.
When it's dry - Aquatabs or similar are a must.
When it's wet - tank water at huts is good, stream water not so good.
Rivers/streams can rise quite suddenly, so limit river/stream crossings during your trip.
Good luck mate, only just started back myself, after nearly 50 years out of bush.
