Look, I usually take 50 things, not 10.

But the OP asked about ESSENTIAL things. Those are things which if you don't have them you cant get a deer or will die (or worse still have to go back out to town).

A PLB is not essential. Blokes have been hunting in NZ for decades before they were invented and almost all came back alive and shot deer. Working within your limits and taking care not to have an injury are an excellent substitute, better even than taking a PLB and using it. Improvise - mate !

OK, I have to admit I also take a swanny or similar on every hunt. Overnight, I take a sleeping bag and a pack. I think that's pretty well used up my 10 essential items.

Hope you guys using the wet wipes have made sure your using biodegradable ones!
Even if you dig a small hole I'd hate to come back in six months time and find the bush covered in that s.....
I used to burn my loo paper after a stop, you had just stunk the place up any way and a little extra smell is not going to make all that much difference plus you new from the smoke in which direction not to head

    @223nut !
Youve forgot your bolt ! I suppose you re going rambo style and hunting with just yourr knife ?
That a lot of stuff to carry in your hands . Or do you put it all in your sleeping bag and throw it over your shoulder ?
Im glad to see someone here can do without disposable naps.
I have to add the phone is also a nice to have - never needed at all 10 yr ago. Funny what we cant live without now. I have to admit i do take mine; its lighter than thhe OM 1 with 2 spare lenses and mini tripod. Also a backup or substitute for gps.

Where I go there's always a few nice ferns, and the hand sanitiser in the first aid kit. @Bagheera a pack was sort of a given, something simple without crap getting caught in tight brush. Was avoiding any 'hunting stuff' meat bag / bipod, spare ammo etc

This is what I always carry with me for overnighters or longer, just add food to suit the amount of days away.

    Knife
    Cookset (all inside stainless pot)
    Titanium cutlery
    Boresnake
    30m paracord
    SPOT/PLB
    Headtorch and spare battery
    Med kit
3 litre water bladder (enough for a night on tops with no water source)
    Gps
    Am/fm radio
    Anemometer
X2 small drybags to fit all above
    Binos/rangefinder
Rifle, x4 rounds in Mag (take extra if extended trip)
    Sleeping bag
    Tent
    Airmat, Air pillow (getting soft!)
    Spare thermals, top and bottom
    Spare socks
    Down Jacket
    Anorak
    Pack

That gear can weather the worst on open tops so I know I'm sorted no matter what.

It's a Sitka Bivy 45, which is about 4500 cubic inches or 72 odd litres when opened right up

Pretty much my list, though I include bog roll and thermal blanket/bag. Slowly updating gear to get it lighter 'cause I'm soft.
