13 mile bush
Hey everyone. I’m planning on going for a wander up to the trig above lake Lyndon. Not gonna take the rifle as I’m new to the area and need to practice and learn about long range shooting. Has anyone got any other recommendations on places to visit and worth poking my nose in for an explore? Also after some advice on where to go to talk to someone about long range shooting and running through the basics. Cheers

Introductions thread is a good place to start.

https://www.sparrowhawk.co.nz/ For long range stuff.
Pretty much anywhere in Doc land in Canterbury will have deer. Sit down watching a big area of bushline about 2 hrs before dark until it gets dark. If you don’t see anything try the next gully over the next night.

As Stug said, if you want to get in to long range shooting, a few days at various shoots at Sparrowhawk will definitely help. Lots of reactive targets, varying scenario's, a bunch of good guys, and not expensive. The help and advice you will get will get you shooting further and faster than just spending the odd day on the hill. They have the "Hunter Challenge" coming up in 2 weeks. 18 targets at varying distances, mostly within 450-500 metres. Walk around circuit, hunting rifles only for scoring, only first shots count, but 2 allowed per target if you want to practice what you learn.
