Most bullets have expanded after only 25mm of travel in the animal. The usual cup and core bullet will not hold togeather to reach the vitals of something the size of a mature Red stag. Remember a Red stag is closer in size to Elk than other smaller deer and requires a premium bullet if using the smaller calibers. I have shot my share of game and autopsy all kills when possible. Many times I realised just how lucky I was that it died as quick as it did as penetration was not great. This photo is a stag my daughter shot with her .308. Bullet was 150gr Sierra game king,Range 70m.The photo shows the impact lower centre on the neck [a very lucky photo] His back legs are just starting to fold but his brain is not out yet. When approched he was unconscious not dead we cut his neck. The bullet had stopped on his spine and the spinal cord had only been damaged by bone fragments not what I call good bullet performance, a slower 180gr would have made it further and a better kill.
