16th Nov - Goat Hunting Rimutakas

    Hi

This story might sound crap to fellow and experienced hunters as am just beginning to get into footsteps of the mightier ones. Saturday 16th Nov, a cloudy but yet a beautiful day to hunt entering from the southern end of lower north island as we had gusty northernlies.. Head wind meant a favor for a newbie like me as this would definitely keep my scent down hills..

Left Lower Hutt at 3.30am on a road trip of an hour nd a half to my goat hunting spot.. reached at 5am.. it was a bit more dark than usual as it was a cloudy day.. Unfortunately I went alone as I couldn't find any1 with similar interest in my friends to join for the hunt.. started working up the tracks with cold misty wind on the face.. day was breaking and it was so beautiful, feeling of being out there was great.. walked for an hour and half before reaching a slip that had fresh grass growing.. thinking as a goat if they do have the brains to, i would definitely be there lol.. so i just dropped my back pack and thoought to rest for a while..

having not shot any game animal since my FAL and about 6 - 10 previous hunt trips, the first loud call of a billy made me super excited.. wow i thoought this was my day... i got a bullet out and loaded it in the magazine of my 6.5x55.. now it was just a wait moment till they would pop in the clearing about 200m from where i was..

A hours wait, and finally a mob of about 7 popped looking down the slip.. slowly i lined up my gun on a small rise that i was siting behind.. I have a cheap scope mounted on my rifle and being on the day the wind was strong, i was not sure how much up o down the bullet would rise o drop.. so i took shot a a bigger target area to at least have a hit,

Boom went the rifle with a sound effect from the echo.. 1 step, 2 step and down it comes sliding down the slip... wow, finally, have nailed it.. the others took of the track into the covering forest near by..

i walked up the slip to where it had stopped and got it to a bit flat spot.. gutted it and than it was a long walk back to the car.. what a great day.. was now excited and happy to get home.. wanted to see the reactions of the mrs face when she would finally see that i have got some meat to put on the table..

A great day, done ..special thanks Scoped, and others .. your advice and encouraging word has helped alot..

    Cheers
