1st Deer, Getting wife into it - hard to sort gear

    Hey guys,

I'm relatively new to deer hunting - got invited on my first deer hunt at Christmas time. On that trip the mate who took me out shot a deer - I loved it and I'm pretty hooked.
Have been out about 1/2 dozen times now after buying a lighter hunting rifle (My RPR was a mongrel in the bush) and lock down etc
Went out with my wife first weekend out of lock down to see if I could get her interested in coming out - and wouldn't you know it got my first deer with her there.
A yearling male, barely a spiker so not exactly a trophy head like lots of you guys post on here but should be good eating and was cool to get it with the wife.

Since the wife enjoyed it I thought that was a winner, took her out looking for some boots this weekend just gone - none of the local stores (Hamilton) stocked boots under a sz8 mens and womans gear in general seems tough to come by (size S/XS) - how do you guys get on with gear for women?

Well done on getting ya first deer. A spiker will be great eating.

I don't know much about women's gear specifically but surprised you couldn't find stuff.

Any outdoor shop will have womans boots, try Kathmandu, torpedo 7, macpac etc etc. You don't just have to go to hunting stores. Again for outdoor gear it doesn't have to be camo, all those shops will have decent outdoor clothes for women. However that said, most of the hunting brands have a line of womens gear.

was ideally looking for a high top boot - smallest size stocked was sz8 mens, Torpedo 7 and Bivouac had Lowa but wanting something entry level for now - looking at something like the Hunters Element Lima boots

@Shadowsol Went through this with the Missus start of last year. Found that Hamills Te Awamutu stock a bit of ladies gear and will order in a bunch of different sizes to make sure the lady is all set, comfortable and happy.

katmando....has them in small sizes, think wife is size 4.5 it took me a while to convince wife to buy that particular pair, they actually have a heel, most tramping boots dont, when going down steep or greasy, you want/NEED a heel to dig in.
great stuff getting the "pricket" they are great eating, some of the best of all.
the gear from warehouse is pretty darn good and price is very much so.I prefer thier polarfleece as can get it thin/light enough that dont over heat on warm day.

Ridgeline make womens (and mens) gear.

It's reasonably cheap by comparison with some of the other more Gucci brands.

My local hunting shop stocks a lot of gear, and lots of Stoney Creek. They have a whole rack of womens hunting gear, and if its in the catalogue they will order it in for you if its not in stock. Definitely a lot of choice for good hunting clothing for woman.

The thing is "hunting gear" is not needed anyhow, just make sure she has the basics, good baselayer, good warm top, a decent rain jacket, and off you go, you dont need to have "Stoney Creek" or "Kuiu" emblazoned across your garments to shoot a deer.

Yep been through this with me wifey. Boots wise ended up with Scarpa Ranger Active Lite in size 5 1/2. Not exactly entry level but I've found getting her good gear keeps her more comfortable, confident and interested. Stoney creek also do a good range of women's clothing that fits her small frame.

I actually have this problem for myself. I take a men's size 7 which is very hard to find, I wore a pair of blue ladies scarpas for years and managed to get a pair of 7 Sportivas in bivouac when I need a replacement, these will probably need replacing next year too. But these are my full shank boots for taking crampons. For my light boots I wear Grisport hikers a great boot at a good price.

And don't talk to me about socks most men's socks that are supposedly my size certainly are not.

I shot my last goat on Friday wearing my Hi-vis work shirt under a 20 year old Kathmandu down jacket and shorts. I own no camo clothing, I might when things need replacing but as always budget is everything for me.
