69gr targex, 69gr TMK if you can find it
69 gr sst on remmi vtr 1:8 twist. I think , never checked Can't say on deer but works at up 800m on big red boomer roos , still opens with just just full penetration at this distance thru boiler room head/ neck shots full penetration T
At 800m no recovery of projjie
Most of people go for the shoulder/ grease shots with 223 at 300 or so meters. Now you all put to shame with 800 m head shots on roos. I need to dust off the 223 and start practicing.
Really,800mtr with 223 on big roos.Id thort the 223 wouldv run out of puff by then for kill shots.?
I don't think you use a Tikka @gimp ?
I think it may be a Tikka thing, 77gr TMK's great groups, 73gr ELDM's also group fine but the 80gr ELDM's not good
That's an interesting question... Modern type ammo has certainly made a lot of difference to the performance of this round.
An old culler I knew for a while used a .223 for quite a bit - his viewpoint was "anywhere in the eye son, anywhere in the eye". Dunno how many animals he accounted for with the caliber but I think it would be safe to measure it in barrels rather than rounds or animals. He did make an addition to that statement once in my hearing though, "now that's anywhere in the two eyes at the front knowing your type - I'm not talking about the Inglewood eyeball son...".
24gr 2206h. Loaded 0.020” off at an overall length of 2.515”.
I had the throat on mine pushed forward by 0.080”
it was suggested above that removing 80% of the plastic tip made a difference all be it at expence of not being so aerodynamic....
now if my memory is correct (sometimes its not) the nosler ballistic tip was one of if not the first projectile to get better B.C. by adding tip..and before that..pretty much all the precision ammunition would have been hollow point??? the theory being the small pocket of air in HP was more uniform than mashed lead tip???? if that is ideed the case, maybe melt out that plastic tip completely and have a 78???grain hollow point that is now slightly shorter ???? maybe better??? maybe not...but if you have a box of them and struggle to get them to group all it will cost you is a little time and half dozen round to prove it one way or the other...
Yeah it's worth a thought MD, I checked some old targets and I have tried Hunter_Nick's load already except the distance from the lands but it grouped terrible. I do have plenty of projectiles that do work so I may not bother with them at all.
Thanks for the suggestion mate
If it shoots the 77TMK well I wouldn't bother trying to modify the 80 ELDM by removing the tip or whatever
Had my T3 barrel long throated just so I can run AR2208 and it shoots 73gr, 75gr, 80gr eld-m and Hornady 75gr hpbt easy sub MOA sometimes .25 MOA if I’ve got my act together. Tried 3 rounds of Sierra 77gr but needed more for a decent load development, very expensive projectiles compared to the Hornady pills. I do like 80 grainers better deer killing wise and BC at distance.
74 Targex at 240 yds this evening.

An offset tip on a spear, certainly, and arrow, maybe. But I'd bet you a cold one that simple aerodynamics are not representative of the trajectory of supersonic bullets spinning at >200,000 rpm, where an offset tip essentially becomes a solid object with slightly larger frontal diameter than a centered tip.
My understanding from one of the Hornady Podcasts with balistician Jayden Quinlan (maybe Episode #29) is that off-center bullets don't affect accuracy until the bullets go transonic because there is effectively an "air cushion" around the front of the bullet and the spin rate negates any off-center mass. The off-center tip might decrease BC a bit due to increased frontal area, but that would just reduce effective range, not accuracy. Picture the BC reduction of a blunt-tip soft point vs a pointy tip hunting bullet.
My practical take-away is that any accuracy issues from off-center tips shot within normal hunting ranges would be the result of the handload components, rather than offset bullet tips.
Commentary on Rokslide
Terrible roar. Haven't shot a real stag. Have passed on scrubby 8 point reds and smaller Fallow. Have only seen one decent Fallow.
Saw the good buck last night but he gave me the slip.
This chap went home for the charity though. 250 yds back on. Tried to neck shoot him. Bit low - bullet creased his back bone twice and then entered through the withers and exited out his front. Dropped on the spot. 74 Targex. Almost out of them and then it will be time for a change.

Some recent culling work, 64g Winchester extreme point.
No real test with neck shots
Shot some goats last week using Winchester 64 grains out of the 223. Quite impressed at the internal damage they caused.
Just out of curiosity how do the Sierra 55gr superoos perform?
Neither
The labelling says they are just Gamekings. They go well on deer.

The 65gr game king is the best deer bullet combination of accuracy and performance on game I have found while being constrained by twist rate....1 in 9 twist
75 gr eldm @10m top of neck shot.
Grumpy bugger charged in to 5m after hearing a fence wire ping. Couldn't get a shot through the sticks that close so stopped him quick after he went to leave.

Only one decent antler, the off side is 3 spikes. He was missing an ear on the good side. That was the only noticeable injury.
