Does it come with the bottom metal?

Beg to differ. The Fatbum [22-250] and triple deuce are a world apart in performance. The 222 is good to 2 hundy and the Fatbum can sting to 4 hundy. Jon Williams used the Fatbum in the veniuson era and for that reason . He could not guarantee meat on the ground.
All this about shooting a brown bear with a 223rem....
I find it similar to doing something like catching a blue marlin on 10kg gear. It can be done, but why would you? Just to prove it can be done I guess, not to suggest it's the best tool for the job.
And no I'm not referring to the rifle lol
I may have an old rod and rifle in the shed (maybe) from the mid to late 70s. The talking point here is the cover pic and article inside.
It was a stag shot in the bush beside one of the lakes outside rotorua. Can't remember which on.
The guy used a 22 hornet he had bought just before he got on the plane in Sydney.
That's how easy it was back then to bring a firearm in. Must've done whatever the obviously minimal paperwork required when he hit NZ.
Bought it for deer shooting so not a varmint rifle
A good size stag too
I was taught to hunt and shoot by an uncle of mine on his King Country farm. At that point in time, one of his blocks up near Marakopa was overrun with goats. The rifle of choice then was a .22lr shooting a Winchester Laser ammo, and we killed thousands with them. I didn’t know anything different - it just worked when you smacked them in the neck or head.
I was talking with a guy last week who moved from a 300WM to 7mm08, and told me he only neck shoots because he’s ’uncomfortable’ with the power of the 7mm…… So it all comes down to your frame of reference, and what level of BS you’ve been sold along the way.
Yep well, Like you I grew up shooting goats and pigs with a .22 at Marokopa. Which farm were you shooting on? From there I Progressed in overlapping rough order through 303, 6.5x55, 270,222, 308,280AI,6.5 Grendel,223, 6.5/284 and back to 270. With some minor dabbles with other calibres as well.
Hunted with/ Took hundreds of people hunting, Guided for a bit. So those are my frame's of reference.
So I read what you wrote, and Call BS myself on your story of a guy only neck shooting with 708. Because if you are that uncomfortable with a calibre you wouldn't use it. Plus its an irrational position too hold.
what level of BS have you been sold Nick?
I ask because I feel that that's an unreasonable accusation to lay on most of the people commenting in this thread.
I’m getting the feeling this thread is about to run to it’s conclusion the way it’s going unless it gets back on track. Shame really after 158 pages.
I thought the first post for 2025 was someone posting using the new heavy... 100gr pill in 223 becuase the old heavies 80gr etc are so passe. LOL.
Back on track.
Happy new years day for me (not so much for him)
223 doin its job. 9 twist , 60gr tmk.
Just to clarify, I’m not laying accusations on anyone. I was just trying to articulate that we all come from different backgrounds to this thread, and these ‘foundational influences’ have a huge part to play in how we look at the discussion. Another example: a very good friend and mentor of mine was asking me about the specs and performance of my 22 creedmoor recently. After he had formed a picture of what it was his words to me were - ‘that’s a bit of a silly exercise?!? My 6x45 will kill just as well with about 20gr less powder’. Essentially saying that in his eyes it was more cartridge than required to get the job done. Or perhaps not worth the extra effort and expense over a .223 case.
My first time tahr hunting the ‘expert’ of the party was visibly concerned that I was ‘only’ using a 260. He came along with me for ‘backup’ with his 7mmRM. I happily killed a 13” bull with a single shot, and watched him use 10 rounds to kill one animal. So there’s some BS out there, and I feel for some of the young guys as it’s a minefield to navigate.
For the record, if I was to start again with a clean slate and have one centrefire in my possession it would be a Blaser K95 in 6XC.
And the guy with 7mm08 is 100% true, he’s a mate that I race with.
Started with a ultralight mountain rifle in 7mm08 in the gun safe, one rifle to rule them all. But as it turns out, it got lonely, so a 223 sits beside it. Use both. Love both. Both kill.
Well Nick that's a far far better and fairer wording than what I read last night. :)
In that regard, do you have any anecdotal experiences of guys with bigger guns who are not, for want of a better word, aresholes? because that's not in my view, a good way to judge the merits of any cartridge.
For example, not once have I used an individual who uses a 22 calibre firearm and how they used it poorly to example why the calibre shouldn't be used.
I have, Tahr are no respecters of any ×63/magnum etc where the bullet doesn't do its job cause it's not constructed/sent with the right terminal ballistics in mind or shots are poorly placed, or just bad luck. I can think of at least 3 episodes I've watched first hand, and there are several pitiful episodes on you-tube that Ive seen. Anybody who has guided a bit will have followed up on these.
The point being none of these fuck-ups are purely the result of the "energy" placed on the game I.e. are not calibre or cartridge dependant
Sons first deer 1/12 tikka 223 shooting Belmont 55gr at 175yards very happy little manhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...71de5e52d0.jpg

Excellent shooting young fella. You must have an awesome Dad.
Almost the same as me. Started with a 270. Then a 22 magnum which is pretty useless without private land to shoot on.
Nowadays the 270 is joined in the safe with a 22lr and a 223 which is a great calibre on wallabies. Still haven't taken a deer with it yet because @Micky Duck is always hitting them first. :D
To be completely honest, most of the guys I know in the sport are using cartridges on the smaller end of the spectrum. Most have gone big at some stage, but settled on something more moderate. I have one mate that used to use a 300WM (as well as a 6x45). We used to compare notes on his mills with the 300 and mine with something smaller. He doesn’t use the 300 anymore, but says he will own one again just because it’s ‘cool’. He still has the 6x45 and a recently purchased tikka 308.
I’ve got no problem with whatever anyone else uses. A 225gr ELD-M from a big magnum is an impressive thing- just doesn’t work for me (I can’t shoot one to save myself)
That's awesome @buzzmann. Probably about time he got a new rifle though....:)
Last evening. 300 yds with the 62 grn Maker. Neck shot under the chin.

Then we did some culling.
And here's what happens if populations aren't controlled. I shot this potty thing. Just fit for dog tucker. 150 yards through thermal with Targex 74 grn. Craig's Visla. There are lots of deer in this area looking like this.
Attachment 266487
And Craig with the thermal too on the way back to the ute... 160 odd yards and the Targex. Bang flop. Different area to the skinny one so in better condition.

Not yesterday and last night but yes I am using it but it's on my Kimber 257R. I have a Sytong HT-70 (similar to the Zulus) on a Tikka 223 that I use a lot.
Yesterday I used my Savage Lightweight .223 (Hardy barrel) with a Zeiss HD5 3-15 on it till dark and then switched to my M7 .223 with a Sytong thermal on it (outstanding) for the quad ride back.
Lots of gear eh. But at my age I reckon Ive kind of earnt it.
Tahr the photo of the skinny Fallow and even the other 2 look to be lying on good grass/tucker.
Is the feed just not there to sustain the current population?
Could there be another reason to poor condition? Older deer nearing the end of their lifespan maybe.
Don't normally see to many skinny deer on farmland, unless they are sick or the land is really marginal country which by your photos looks to not be the case.
Either way having a hunt with your lad would of been a nice day/night out.
Thats a relevant comment. These poor condition deer are leaking from a large private scrub block of shit country where there is low hunting pressure. They have been malnourished their whole lives. While there is excellent grass and cover outside of their sanctuary they seem to prefer to return to their home range after a nightly foray onto surrounding farm country. Those that don't return and take up new digs never seem to get back to decent condition or get popped before they can. And Im constantly culling new arrivals.
I really don't understand landowners letting it get too that level. It doesn't do them, the land, or the animals any good.
My father is getting like this. The deer decimate his corn and do a good number on the hay yet he feeds them through the winter. We hunt the farm but he doesn’t want us to kill very many of them. They have become his pets and it’s very irritating. 17 Whitetail crossed the road in front of me after hunting hours behind his pole sheds. It’s a bit ridiculous. It’s money wasted feeding them in the winter and reduced yield of the crops. I have a plan for next year to reduce the herd a little more and he won’t find out about it, I have property that connects to his so I can drag them to my property and tell him I shot them on mine. If the neighbors would kill some deer it would help but it’s all about the antlers in the US.
