I think of them as reactive long range targets
About 500m max on the bigger stuff. A little further for nanies etc. depends on your bullet choice. Only go further than that if you have experience with making correct wind calls and have tested you bullets expansion on lighter game before you take on these bigger game.
We’re not talking about what it might take down it’s what it will take down every time with minimal wind deflection in light wind.
I’ve tested bullets in my 270. And the Barnes lrx etc expands 1/2 the bullet at 280m but only 1/4 at 425m. I haven’t found one in the dirt at 725m yet. But I expect it would hardly open up at all. So it’s likely to do little damage.
I’ve just found recently a wealth of knowledge from an old timer gunsmith called “the real gunsmith” with Randy Shelby that has confirmed what I’ve learnt over the last few years since we’ve started pushing the envelope on range. I shoot some game at long ranges ie 800m but they are light animals such as Roos and rabbits, perfect to test and practice. But larger game I keep inside 300-400 with the 270 because I know it works. Outside that it’s iffy, you might get lucky.
He’s done a lot of shooting this guy and believes all these new eldx bullets etc are not real tough game bullets just glorified match bullets.
Check out his bullet technology.
