In my opinion if people have to ask these sorts of questions then a) they shouldn't use the cal and b) don't go hunting until you know your rifle. So much info in nz hunting books and on the internet about all this sort of thing. It all comes down to shooter ability. Even on the side of the ammo box it has info on velocity etc. Don't try to shoot beyond your ability because someone told you a particlar calibre could shoot 1000mtrs.

And your choice of pill. Dunno about 20in barrel but in 24in bbl Weatherby with 178 AMAXs 800 yards is realistic if it’s now blowing its tits off

More wanting to know how much effective cutting 4 inches off will effect killing range from someone with same barrel length and cal.

Depends on the bullet / powder combo.

Do you reload or are you a factory ammo shooter?

Seriously though, sell it and get a 270

Work on about 40fps lost per inch of barrel length lost. So roughly lose 160 fps. Run it through a ballistic calculator. Look for about 1800fps velocity and/or 1000ft lbs energy as an idea of the limit.

You would probably be at about the same velocity/ energy levels as a 30 06 with 165 gr bullets so you should be OK out to about 700 odd yards so long as you can place your shot well.

I run a 20 inch barrel on my 300wsm.Using 178 elf-x at 2950fps.Shoot gongs at 800 yards with 1256ft lbs of energy so still capable of further.I only shoot animals out to 500 tho as that’s what I feel comfortable of a good clean kill.If you are going to try longer ranges, practice on paper and gongs before the real thing

Great question mate.....I use a range finder for golfing, hunting, and a plethora of other things.......distance in the Bush can be subjective.....if you can glass an animal ,then you can range find it....makes it simple....I have the Vortex optics fury HD 10x42...a little spendy yeah I know....but the number of times I’ve made an estimate of distance only to find I was no where close.......

A 1 moa group at 700 metres is about an 8" (20cm) diameter circle. ANY wind or shooter error or even slight range under or over estimation will mean a miss or a wound. I don't believe such shooting is ethical with sporter rifles. I agree with @Monk. Not many hunters are capable of reliably shooting inside 1 moa at much over 200m.
