Thread: .308 round choises 150 grain vs 180 grain on red stags

Shot 2 12 pointers last April out to 200yds using 308 150gr ssts.Good centre sholder shots,they hit the deck and dont move.Shot a big bodied 12 a few yrs ago using 165gr ssts at about 80yds,bang flop.Deer wont know the difference,aim at centre of sholder is like breaking the diff of yr car,stop.

Attempting to channel @ Mickey Duck 150 or 170 gr round nose cup n core at that range, hell out to 200 yds they'll have near as dammit the same trajectory as a sharp pointy flash boat tail jobby going the same speed and be better at handling shrubbery that may be in the way. 😁

put the .308back in the cupboard and take your .270.Flame throwers have got way more HP than the .308

Count me in for another SST lover.

The ssts did their job
Pick one that is accurate in your rifle
Learn it
Use it
Hit them in the vital bits until your sure you can pull off the tricky shots
That will work

If your guns sighted in with the 150grain power point leave it at that you. Go find yourself a stag mate. If it doesn’t go down it was probably a shit shot and 180gr wouldn’t have made a difference either.

Another vote for the 165gr SST. Superb bullet out of a 308 at moderate 2,500-2650 velocities. Or if you can get them 165gr Nosler Partitions - another superb bullet.

Same buzz, with the 30s SST, close range they fragment with minimal penetration. Interlocks, fusion in 150 have done me well imo

How fast are the SST’s going? We have probably shot in excess of 150 reds with the same load and never, ever have had an issue from 4 yards to 400. We have seriously road tested them.

I used the 150 grain fusions in 308 to great effect and fed PowerShot was my go to.
Any good cup and core, rem core lok, win power point will do the trick.

I went through the same thing a few years ago with what ammo to use in my 308. A guy who has represented NZ for shooting recommended Nosler 165g. It has a very good BC too. I wouldn’t use anything else now.

I had issues with the 150gr after changing from the interlock to get a bit better bc and they are sopost to be the same bullet different yip...the plastic tip makes them open a lot more violently, That combined with a relatively low sectional density ment I had multiple failures to penetrate at bush ranges and I swore off them. They were only being launched at around 2800 from memory.

The greater SD and lower speeds of the 165 and 180gr means they hold together much better...I have a few boxes of 180gr but my current 308 doesn't like them much.

My two cents. Whats more important than the projectile you chose, is where you naturally aim.

I once had a major disagreement with a guy. we both used .270 win. I used and swore by corlokts. He hated them as too hard and loved ballistic tips. My experience with BT's had been, well, Meh.
Turns out my natural aiming point tended to smash through bone. His was a bit further back. His bulet worked well for him. Mine worked well for me. Both are good it turns out.

asking 10 people on the net will give you an answer, but maybe not the one you need. Work out what you want to do and choose from there.

Absolutely.
One person's perfect bullet performance is different to another's.
Some like them to exit everything...some like them to dump all the energy in the animal and not exit.
Some guys like a big girls arse some like a little one.

In tight bush I want definite expansion and a definite exit for blood trail if needed.
Open country I'm not so concerned about an exit because generally can see where they roll down etc.
