Thread: 7mm.08 Club

I use a 7mm.08 for most of my shooting in the North Island, and I was wondering what reload recipies and accessory combinations others have found to be reliable and accurate.

Mine may be only a mossberg patriot, but with a 3-9x40 bushnell elite 1200 scope, and a DPT suppressor, that thing has absolutely flattened 2 deer and innumerable goats over the last 3 years.

I have experimented around with different recipies; 100gn HP's kept a grouping within the last digit of my thumb at 50 yards, and I used them to absolutely drop the 2 deer at 50 and 80 yds, both shot in the neck, one high up by the head and the other just by the shoulder. I also found the Sierra 120gn SP's and 150gn HPBT's to be very accurate, within the last digit and the nail of my thumb respectively at 50 yds.

I went shooting just last week and had instant drops for all 9 goats I shot. The fact the 150gn'ers were travelling at 2600fps may have helped, a bit overkill on goats but overkill is still meat in the freezer! Looking forward to getting a deer with them as they are up there with the most humane bullets I've found, accurate and oomphy. Don't want to be in the situation where the animal suffers, prefer the instant "eating-dinner-then-bang-it's-now-steaks".

I use 140g Berger VLD Hunting in my 708 and 168g Berger Classic Hunters in my 284.

I experimented with my 284 and Sierra but cant go past my Bergers

Used a 7mm/08 for nearly 20 years a decade or so back and found the Hornady 139 flat base to be a reliable and good killer and I have no reason to believe it would be any different now.

I am running the nosler 120BT coming out of a 17" tube with a DPT can. can't remember the exact powder weight of 2206h off hand. I have found them to be quite destructive on the meat though, it's my carbine for when I expect to be shooting off hand so shot placement isn't always perfect. I was thinking of changing up to a heavier slug when I run out, maybe the same pills I run through my 7mmRM to keep things simple. I have also had a good run with the 7mm 154sst from hornady.

My buddy I shoot with has a 7mm 08 rem shoots a 150 gr Nosler accubond , while I’ve never hunted with it at the range it’s a real tack driver very impressed think I’ll join the club might go to a 140 gr like to hear how it performs in the field .

I've owned a 7/08 for a while now.

Had good success with the140gr BT and now, the 162gr Amax.

I'm using 139gn SST with a modest amount of 2206H (40.0). The two spikers I have shot with it have dropped on the spot.

And how have these been working out for you @25/08IMP ?

I've just started using the 140gr Nosler B Tips at about 2750 fps but I'm not yet fully convinced. I was expecting them to mushroom but they seem to shatter. I need to do a bit more hunting with them yet but they're certainly accurate enough.

I'm using 139gr SSTs at just under 3k with 2208. got a hind late last year through the chest front on and the fragments did sever the stomach a little, was only 45odd m away so would have been humming for sure but the fragmentation was a bit much for that situation. 3 other kills either through neck or chest from side on have been perfect though so not going to change.

Took a stag with the 162 eld Ms in my 7mm08 and it did its job. The lower velocity seems to work well with them first shot went it the crease and was inside the offsitd shoulder well expanded. The lungs were shredded heart was a mess. I also put one in its chest head on to put it down as it was thrashing a bit. The bullet actually made it it further than I hoped and got the guts but my partner was with me and wanted to make sure it died quickly as she's not used to things not dying instantly.

You are spoiled for choice, bush hunting any cup n core in 140-160 gn will work fine, the 145 gn Speer Hotcore are very good match with 7mm08 and cheap as chips. If you want to reach out further then 150 NBTs, 150 ELDX, 154SSTs, 160 TMKs or 162 AMAX or ELDMs are all good options
