7mm rem mag vs 300wsm

Hey team, hopefully everyone’s not losing their minds too much, it’s probably been asked several times before so I do apologise but I’m looking at getting a new rifle and I’m tossing up between 7mm rem mag and a 300 wsm. I’ll be using it on animals out to a max of 700-800 but also want to be able to have some fun target shooting at longer ranges. I currently have a 308 but I’m using that for every type of hunting at the moment so want to retire it to a bush rifle.
Any advise would be appreciated and any pros and cons of each caliber

Do the same thing at end of the day mate, ones short and ones long. Can both be cut down to 20/22inches. Can both be loaded with lites or heavys. Both good weapons

The BC of 7mm projectiles is generally better than the 30cal. So you need to go to a lot heavier 30cal to equal the bc of a lighter 7mm. This will mean more recoil in the 30cal. But if you are muzzle braking or using a suppressor that can be a moot point.
I had a 7mm mag for a number of years and it used it out to 650yds on game. Really liked it.
I think High Country boy on here has a Kimber 7mm mag for sale.

Both will do what you want, choose the one YOU can shoot most accurately. If possible get some time to shoot both rifles in the make/brand you want to buy. Stock design can play a big part in shooting magnums accurately . While the recoil is not that different in total ft/lbs the RM is more of a big push compared to WSM which feels sharper to me.

Yep I’ve got the kimber 7mmrm for sale, I find the recoil realitively tame, it’s less of a noticeable recoil than my Forbes 270, my dad had a 300wsm and found the recoil a lot worse on it.

Iv had both and preferred the Rem Mag for the aforementioned push recoil rather than getting hit in the shoulder with a hammer.

Both good stag and bull thar killers.

Definitely want some sort of muzzle attachment on the WSM though. Especially if it's a light rifle which most are these days.

As chainsaw has mentioned the recoil impulse from the wsm is alot harder vs the 7mmRM due to running faster powders in my opinion. I built one a few years ago then on sold it as it just didn't do anything my 7mmmag wouldn't do with less fuss. Still have the 7.

The 180 ELD-Ms I shoot from my 7RM set off at 2840 and have a very high BC for wind bucking and retained energy. To get to the same sort of BC in .30 cal you need to be well over 200 grains, with the attendant recoil. .300 WSM isn’t really suited to launching those bullets in the same way that bigger .30s can.

7 RM (or 7 BM) would be my choice.

Thanks for the info guys. My mate has a tikka t3 300wsm and he rates it. I’ve had a couple shots with it and was bloody surprised how much it kicked (going from 308 to that). I was looking at getting the t3x lite in one of these calibers as I don’t have the coin to splash out on something too crazy

All the points seem to have been covered. Both work equally well mate so you can’t go wrong. Personally I use a 7mm rem mag. Here’s a vid I made on it not long ago.

Are you efficient at shooting animals at 700-800 metres?or just wanting to get into it?if you don't know what your doing(have you ever shot an animal at 700?)don't even worry about a "7-800m gun".there is Sooo much to learn/experience at those ranges before the gun makes a difference.

I’ve shot out to 600 on goats with my 308 and further on targets. But haven’t gone beyond that on animals for ethical reasons

Take a look at 6.5 PRC you will be surprised,a 143grn has more hitting power, higher bullet speeds than the 7mm rem mag 162grn at distances over 500,factory ammo specs.less recoil.

I have a Remington 700 in .300wsm with a terminator muzzle brake, it has less kick than my marlin x7 in .308.
I have shot a couple of mates 7mmremmags and didn't notice any difference in felt recoil.
Both do the same job, all the dear I have shot with mine have fallen over on the spot.
I just use factory ammo and it is accurate and fairly common.
