Thread: 7mm rem mag vs 300wsm

I moved from being a 30 cal shooter - 308/30-06/300Win Mag/300Blaser mag to 7mm. So with 5 7mm Rem Mags later and now a 7mm SAUM and 7mm Blaser on the way. Fantastic ballistic performance, a touch less recoil and no need for 30cal Heavies which drive a bunch of recoil in a light rifle. I also owned 270WSM (fast - limited bullet choice and barrel twist) and 6.5x55 (gentle, kids loved it) but the 7mm was my sweet spot. And with 7mm Rem Mag ammo you have a good choice if you don't hand load, and its economical if you do hand load.

Also you can get great performance without a using 24in barrel is you know what your doing. But hey you can shoot anything at all with a the humble 308 if you need to, out to very long way. nothing walks away from that beautiful cartridge if you choose the right projectile and do your your part.

I have both and prefer the 300WSM's for me they have been more consistently accurate than the 7mm mags.
There is a reason that they have been used for bench rest shooting.

I also feel in a similar weight rifle 7mm rem mag kicks the same or more due to burning more powder and generally has a higher muzzle pressure producing more blast.

7mm Mag looks good on paper and I have been working on another 7mm rem mag rifle over the lock down but still plan on sticking with the 300wsm for more of my hunting.

Im yet to find a rem mag that wont shoot raggered hole 100yd groups kittens to shoot easy to find bits and pieces for. 300wsms one of my all time favorites on cool factor but i didnt end up playing with my one certainly imagen being a wsm itll be less forgiving recoil wise

1st of all I do not own a 7rm. I love my 300wsm. I like the modern case design of the wsm over the 7rm. Efficient, minimal trimming, and like how it looks. Its very consistent as well and it just shoots any bullet I throw in it. It's ludacris how easy it is.

Don't believe a 300wsm kicks more than a 7rm.

i have owned 2 different 300WSM's and shot a couple more and owned 4 different 7RM's, mixture of stocks, makes, weights and models. I do most of my load dev without suppressor or brake. The recoil on 300wsm is definitely sharper and harder than the RM. After 18 - 20 rounds your shoulder knows about it. Put a suppressor or brake on either one and they are tame.

Ive tried them all, endlessly poured over ballistic charts and spent a small fortune.

But if I want to make certain stuff stays dead I use my 300saum every time (pretty much the same as the 300wsm). 20", 168grn NBT, out to 5-600 yards. Dead as a dead thing every time. I wouldn't step in its way at 800 yards either. The difference between sleek and not so sleek is just a few clicks.

30 cal simply makes bigger holes in my experience. Maybe its the larger frontal surface area of the projectiles at any given weight.

Yea dunno about that 7rm surely has the edge. Would be bloody close though be more efficient out of prc .probably using 10gns less powder for very similar performance .Depend on the individual set up i guess the 143 is right up their with the 162 bc how fast does prc drive the 143? 2900? If so rem mag still has edge just if doing 3000

you are right I was comparing Hornady precision hunter 143eldx to Hornady 162 interlok.when compared to the equivalent 162 eldx the rem mag edges the PRC.Comparing Rem mag 154 grn sst,the prc over takes in velocity at 500 yards and hitting power at 800.PRC got some grunt.

You can compare as many ballistic charts as you can find on the internet but they’re not important. End of the day they both kill things just as dead as each other. Nothing I’ve shot with my WSM has got up and said I wish you’d used a rem mag, They just don’t get up. Both will do the job you are looking for. So just pick one and go kill some stuff with it.............. in saying all that the WSM is better

yea agree with all of that,if your long range shooting though you should take hitting power into account.I wouldn't want to hitting red deer with anything less than 1100ftlb.

Also let me no what animals speak english and what their preferences of tea are bell or dilmah? Id like to barter and save some gun powder rather than knock on their chest with a rem mag without an invite. Maybe if i tried using the wsm itd be a head shot ? Its the age old debate eh the wsm damn cool they both do the job as above

When buying the Tikka I was a little unsure whether to decide on 7mm Rem Mag or some .30 cal. It's a pretty lightweight rifle so the recoil is definately something to consider. Thus I decided on the 7mm Rem Mag and I am very happy I did. That being said a .300 WSM won't be a bad choice at all. It will kick a bit harder but in a hunting situation you won't feel much difference. Might be different when target shooting, though. The performance of both calibers is pretty similar anyway.

The wsm may give you more projectile choice while mag feeding also depending on make of rifle
