Biggest problem is that you have to demonstrate storage capability and an address for your rifles while in NZ.
For most people coming over they are either using a guide or staying with someone who has a licence and inspected security Safe etc.
I have not heard anyone complain that getting a visitor permit is unduly hard. Yes some hoops to jump through so start early to give yourself time to get documents in order.

PS make sure you have your documents in place to bring the rifle back to Australia.
