The lower two thirds of the island are where the genetics/minerals produce good heads on public land.

You can hardly come on here and expect GSP coordinates The spot x book is a good idea. Cam has suggested the bottom two thirds. You should be able to sort something out from that start. DOC have some good ballot blocks too.

Dont be put off looking at Nelson/Marlborough,,,its nearly a wasp free zone up there, so much less chance of getting stung in the bush...

Maybe offer up a return hunt or fishing trip. This place is over flowing with great people and I'm sure you are a bloody good bugger so share small bits of yourself and im sure you will get a lot of help.

Other wise start at the beginning like a heap of young people do ... Grab a map, a permit, and get out there and enjoy the hell out of your country.

Your local library might have a copy of the spot x book. They're cheap enough to buy, but even cheaper to borrow.

As has been stated, big heads can crop up almost anywhere in the lower two thirds of the South Island although some areas have better genetics than others.
The trick is finding the animals that haven't been shot before their prime.
Get off the beaten track, walk a bit further than others and seek out the areas that are sometimes overlooked by others...sometimes just plain luck is going to play a part in it too!
