Ahimanawa Acsess Question

Hi guys,

I have been looking at the topo and am curious if anyone knows anything about who has the hunting rights to the central Ahimanawas?

Specifically Upper Toropapa Hut, Upper Panemanga Hut and Lower Ohane Hunt ? I have done some googling and cant find a thing, doesnt appear Heli Sika have anything listed or the "Ahimanawa" Land company on their respective sites.

I know South West of this area Heli Sika has its Ripia blocks, Te Matai Hut etc but there is a huge area of private land in the Ahimanawas which I cant find a thing about.

Any help be appreciated!

The blocks that East Kaweka had are now leased by private peoples so unlikely to get in.

Hamish is correct, its all now leased by a consortium of Private hunters, and they have built a new hut at Lower Ohane (replacing the old hut ) and a new hut at The Horse Paddock above the Kopitonui Stream and have of course taken over Chris's new hut, KitFox, in the Momonanui Stream. Along with all the other landing sites and associated camps.

The northern ones to wilderness lodge are old leases.

That's true, and East Kaweka never had the lease on those 2 blocks. They are still leased to the private leasee's that have always held them as far as I'm aware.

Yes they are nimrod. Lucky enough to spend time there. This year I've got a stewie trip and a 2wk red roar so might miss out this time.

Most of the Ahimanawa area is administered by the Te Awahohonu Forest Trust ( www.teawahohonu.co.nz ) on behalf of the underlying owners. Blocks in there are leased to variety groups/individuals, and previously Chris Crosse leased a number for his clients.

The Ripia/Wharetoto blocks have been under different administration/control for ever, and are variously syndicated or managed as a commercial operation. www.kaiwaho.co.nz is one of those.

20+ years ago I used to drive into the Tatarakina block (off Napier Taupo road) for reds. Not sure who looks after it and if it is still open for hunters to drive in.

We used to book at the Tuwheratua (spelling?) trust office in Taupo.

In April 1995 I shot my first deer in NZ in that block (Khyber pass camp) - a scruffy 4 point stag that was roaring.

Yep shot my first bush deer at tataraakina in the mangawhio block around 2003. Was a great spot to learn bush navigation with the road cutting right through the bottom of the valley. Would love to go back there for old times sake
