Hi Team,
I'm wondering what the track is like up Ahuriri and how far you can drive these days?
Ive got a good 4WD truck but wondering if my SUV Hyundai (work car) will handle it.
Keen to get as far up as the road allows. Anyone know what its like these days?

Probably be OK in SUV. I was last in there in August last year. There is a shingle fan/creek just over half way up that would stop a town car.
Think my brother took his Forester to the road end late last year. About 2yrs ago I got my Legacy GT to about 1km from the end, but I had to be a bit mean to it through a couple of those creek crossings and fans. The side creeks can vary a fair bit depending when the last heavy rain was.

Old man has been doing a bit of shooting from a chopper in the area lately (farmland, not for doc) and said the amount of vehicles they saw going in and out over the roar period he wouldn't be surprised if it's worn it all down to resemble a four lane highway
Road is good all the way to the base hut and another few km further to road end. Well used area and animal numbers were low unless you head right to end of valley. I was there in March and it was well used by mountain bikers and some hunters.

Family trip so if no animals it will be just a walk with a rifle.
Any significant creek crossings? It didnt seem like it on TopoMaps.
Weather looks a bit scetchy. If you stick to the true right we wont encounter anything too dodgy will we?

No river crossings, but a couple of shingle fans washed across track.
Should be ok to base hut in 2wd unless it's been raining recently.
We walked up to next hut, about another 5km from road end and hunted up a side creek on the other side of valley.
Had some sign around, but nothing really fresh.
