    Animal Sign Guide

    Gday all,

Does there exist a ‘guide’ to NZ animal sign? Be it a book or document etc. It would be cool to have a compiled resource for new hunters to assist in identify prints, excrement, wallows, rooting, etc etc.

Keen to hear if something along these lines exists or if people would be interested in something like this.

    Cheers team, happy new year!

Yes there is - think its one of the Lentle/Saxon books, tells all about hoof shape, speed, stance etc etc. Cant remember the name of it.

There’s “Tracking and finding deer in NZ” by Lentle, but only covers deer I believe. Is that the one you’re referring to? More thinking something that covered everything from stoats and ferrets, to wallabies, to Thar and Cham etc. a fully comprehensive sign and tracking guide for hunters and trappers

You can have a look through the better hunting online course. It's all free, has heaps of good info.

Gut instinct maybe?. I'm still learning myself but I know the signs when I re cross my footprints and find 'hoof marks' in the sand that were not there previously with sand splattered around the outside of the print. I'm pretty sure when I find deposits that aren't faded but still dark or black and soft when I give them a squish that they are quite recent. Unless I'm wrong then that's enough to put me on alert. Having said that I'm just about to send off my 'over 60' bowel cancer sample.. might grab a 'stool sample' from the bush next trip and send that back and see where that test result goes rofl!

I have another book also but I must have taken it down to the hut in HH, it's mostly in and around South Westland area.

Brilliant! Exactly what I had in mind. I may try to compile all this stuff into a field guide at some point. Maybe some people will be interested in it, maybe not, I know it would’ve (and probably still will) have helped me when I first got going. Thanks all
