Was there last weekend. No roaring and actually not many deer seen over 3 days. 1 hind taken.

Just out of the Upukerora headwaters . Stags roaring well. Busier than Queen St with other parties. Called it quits early.

Pretty sure the track goes down that ridge in the background
My old uncle use to manage a big doc farm up that way 50 yrs ago.Nothing like doing a boundary fence check at night in the old Land Rover towing a trailor. If I was a good lad Id be allowed to shoot a deer with his 30 06.bugger it would kick like a mule.He s still alive today in TeAnu,if you like hunting storys,he s the man to listen too.
Same spot 40 odd years ago (the gully this side of the track ridge). Used to go over into there from Rangi quite often. As said, it's a grunt back up with a load.
A good roar spot used to be down the big central plateaued elephants-head ridge that comes off the top into the Orua headwaters.

Heard first roars last Friday in Tararuas.
A spotted chestnut stag this evening, split palms,, I won't turn him down if he sneaks into my place to serve my hinds, by trad bow.
@Nathan F That’s interesting, We walked into there from Army hut several years ago, only saw one other party and they go every year, neat valley, plenty of deer.
Was up Mt Patriarch/ Lake Chalice last Monday. A couple of stags roaring down on SE face of Patriarch, one low downstream of Lake and another couple on faces opposite mid Goulter hut. Just back from a drive through Molesworth and look around St James area for old times sake and to have a look at the areas where they’ve been dropping old established pines and redwoods. Happened to see a couple of good stags in Redgate area, again low down and just mooching around. Hunters ute parked by track entrance into Redgate/Tarndale so maybe they’ll get lucky.
