Yeah i don't think it gets much pressure either , would be a good place to go in the next week or so. Just a big climb out if ya carrying meat . I walked out via Kelly Night hut and down the river but going to Pourangaki hut via Rangi tops is good idea i recon !!Quote:

No roars where I was in Nelson Lakes this week, but in other parts I hear they were from another member

Heard first roars last Friday in Tararuas.
A spotted chestnut stag this evening, split palms,, I won't turn him down if he sneaks into my place to serve my hinds, by trad bow.

Was up Mt Patriarch/ Lake Chalice last Monday. A couple of stags roaring down on SE face of Patriarch, one low downstream of Lake and another couple on faces opposite mid Goulter hut. Just back from a drive through Molesworth and look around St James area for old times sake and to have a look at the areas where they’ve been dropping old established pines and redwoods. Happened to see a couple of good stags in Redgate area, again low down and just mooching around. Hunters ute parked by track entrance into Redgate/Tarndale so maybe they’ll get lucky.
Felt like things were just kicking off up the awatere valley yesterday, lots of small hind groups scattered around with the odd 2/3yr old stag just feeding. Right in that last 30mins of light the older stags started making noise. Was neat to watch 5 decent stags all chasing one hind (must've been the hot one), the ran nearly 1km and then back again flat out roaring and trying to hook the hind off away. Good fun to watch
