I have 4 of them, they shoot better than me. Have 2 of them fitted with Bell & Carlson stocks.

Get a tikka. I've got 2, 223 for varmints and 243 for deer.
Cant beat them for entry level simplicity.
My advice would be ONLY get a package desk if its got a decent scope on it.
You're going to end up buying a good scope anyway, so may as well spend the $$ up front rather than having to replace something crap.
The other thing I would say is try and test fire to chose your calibre.
If you're ever in Wellington you're welcome to come to mine and put some rounds thru either of mine
Tim
thanks tim =] im looking at a 308 or 7mm08 (leaning more towards the 308) its hard finding 1 for a good price haha so thats y im thinking a package deal to get me started in the bush and then i can go from there
The other thing to consider is the cost and availability of ammo. Its the reason why I got a 223 rather than a 22-250.
308 is a very common calibre. I was joking in my earlier post
Tim
I have three. 223, 7mm08 and 7mm rem mag in a manners stock.
I like them. 308 is a good choice and far cheaper ammo options for starting out.
As others have mentioned etter to get a bare rifle and a better scope. A weaver classic 3-9x38 is a very good scope for the money and will serve you well. You can generally pick them up reasonably cheap
is there any rifles you guys would recommend staying away from?
I got a fully suppressed tikka T3 - its a good rifle in 7m/08 nice and light and easy to handle - I fitted a Zeiss 3/9/40 scope to completed the package
In my Barry basic opinion stay away from cheaper rifles - wheatherbys, Howas, Nikko sterlings & marlins - value for money and like the old mark 5 Cortina stick with a Tikka or Remington model 7 or model 700 sps. - go bare rifle and save some $$ for a decent scope & rings - you should be able to get a new tikka for $1200.
I saw a 2nd hand Model 7 with scope at H&F taupo for $900 in 308 on the weekend and they got two blued Remington model 700s with a "no name" scope in .270 for $700
good luck

I cant speak for Marlin or Howa but Weatherby certainly make some excellent rifles.
Tell that to VC who nailed a red in the head with Howa 223 from a massive distance last weekend. Be careful only ownership and experience should make those comments . My marlin .17 HMR takes out magpies at 180 mtrs. Sorry that's both brands you just rubbished chap. Cheap chit chat . Needs to based on fact I m afraid .
Cheers Happy
"This is my Flag... Ill only have the one ..
yea Ive had a weatherby & Howa - I also own a marlin & Remington & tikka. out of these makes if I was to go for a cheap rifle id go marlin, then Remington but Im real happy with the Tikka - I had nothing but dramas with the weatherby out of the box and ended up getting rid of it and dropping about $500 in the process. The howa was a .233 suppressed and nothing flash nailed a few fellow down south & a ok rifle, I guess all experiences are different eh? .
If I was recommending a rifle to anyone new to hunting I would still point them towards a Tikka or Remington. ...............hey but that's my 5c .... up to the buyer to ask the questions and do the home work . good luck fella ?
Cheers

Haha, weatherby vanguards are howas with another name on them, bugger all wrong with a howa, they are very well built on a good design. Of the cheaper rifles they are right up there with the tikka although a bit heavier. Nothing wrong with marlin either.
