anyone been in the tangihuas?

Went for a hikoi up into the tangihuas a couple of weeks ago. turned out to be a bit more of a hikoi than i expected but still a good day. went from the lodge up the te haua ura track then onto the main ridge track up to the aerials and back down the horokaka track. saw a couple of goats towards the bottom of horokaka track and a couple of pigs towards the tops where te haua ura and main ridge tracks junction.
Has anyone else been there lately?im thinking about going for another look soon to top up on some goat for salami. ideally itd be nice to go in from tangihua road but have heard the landowner doesnt allow access for hunters, only walkers.

They ran a bunch of contracts a while back. Really gave them a good hammering over the back. Tangihua road end has become much harder hunting.
Still plenty of pigs around though. There soem bluff on the opposite side of the gully from where you'd have seen those goats. Some snipers liem to shoot across to them from a gap further up. I use the dog and sneak around in them. Scary steep in places tho.

Landowner on the north side allows access to hunters last I heard, you can get his number from the doc office. There's a few secret tracks heading off to ridgelines to the north that hunters have carved through the thick bush allows some good ridge-to-ridge sniping of goats. As others stated less goats these days still heaps of pig sign around.
It's a good quiet place for an overnight mountain hikoi and if I get something I get something you know. Often you can see the carpark is empty from the summit and just knowing you have the whole place to yourself is quite peaceful.

@steeve The farmer on tangihua rd is a good bloke he is ok with hunters, no goats down that end. or very few, lots of pigs sign everywhere. Mark is the cocky's name phone number is 0272052212, steep bloody country around there.

yeh i had a yarn to DOC and they mentioned they had cullers through,got a lot by the sounds of it.

yeh im thinking about doing a little over night trip in there sometime soon. i got a number from doc and apparently its a new owner who is a hunter himself, thats the reason he bought the property.not 100% on that info,just passing on what i was told

cheers mate, the number i got given from doc is for Kurt, apparently hes the new landowner. definetly is some steep country in there, that section not far before the aerials is a real little steep bit.

I have been informed that this landowner has moved on, and the new one is hesitant to give access to hunters to cross his land. South side entry heading towards the Pa site you can see on nztopo then head east into the rivers is probably the best bet for daytrips now.

cheers dan. yeh i had a text conversation with the new owner and he seems reasonable. sounds like hes had a few run ins with people pushing their luck so it buggered it for the rest of us.

i went in for a nosey a couple of weeks ago and headed east from the pa site, spent most of the day sliding on my arse and crawling hands and knees around there haha. did see a couple of goats across a valley on the opposite face but too far away for my abilities.

I didn't think he could stop you from crossing his land as it is a paper road?
