has anyone hunted with a 30-30. hear they make a good bush gun?
Been there, done that - fail! Unless you're a dedicated pig hunter I wouldn't bother.

never used one myslef but kinda seems like it has no advantages but lots of disadvantages when compared to other bush calibres like 308...
Much like the 22hornet vs 223 imo
I think you are being a bit harsh on the old "thutty thutty!"
They are great bush rifles, you just have to accept them for what they are, normally iron sighted so max probably 150m (depending on how good you are with irons), they are light short handy rifles with plenty of punch for most of our NZ game, however they will never be the 7mm super turbo ninja magnum with a 1-56x60 scope on it that is normally recommended as a bush rifle on forums! :P
I like the sound of the 7mm stnm. Whats it pushing the 162s? who has a reamer for it? I have a win mod 94 trapper 30/30 with iron sights. never hunted with it but i could probably kill something out to 100m. It does all its work at 10m on sick cows. One day im going to leave my ninja magnum at home and take my 30/30 casing tahr:)
Hahaha!!!! 1200gr water. You made me spit out my biscuit.
i use 7.62x39 in the bush, which has ballistics very similar to the 30 30. put a reflex dot sight on if you dont like the iron sights. as long as you use these calibres as they were intended (up to 150) they are great bush guns in my opinion.
I believe Carlson, who is a member here has done considerable hunting with a 30 30, it maybe worth giving him a pm if you are after some info.
I've shot plenty of deer and pigs with my old 30/30, but its such a compromised weapon when compared to say a .308 bolt action with a 2-7x33 scope.
Both weigh about the same, the bolt action is possibly lighter than the clunky ol lever gun. And with out a scope its hard to check out what that brown dot on that far away slip is, let alone even dream of hitting it.
I don't see any advantage in llimiting yourself to 100m when most centrefires will point and shoot right out to 300m with a 3'' high zero at 100m and a cheap scope attached.

From what I understand , at one stage the 3030 had taken more deer in the US than any other calibre (possibly all calibres put together ) and will continue too do sofor many years too come.
The problem today is there are too many shooters out there and not so many hunters .
The 94 is a handy little repeater , light ,fast and accurate and a fantastic little bush gun in the hands of a HUNTER .
Sold mine cause it was gutless compared too a 6.5 swede.
Bought a rossi 92 in 357mag too use in the bush , but still got the sweed for now.
A lot of hunters use the old dirty thirty in the states... But then again from a tree stand most shots are twenty to fifty meters. They are convenient to carry on a quad and pull up the stand on a cord. Not saying they are suited to NZ but it is a different kettle of fish
I've personally owned (and hunted with all of them) the following lever actions:
Marlin 30/30
Ruger .22magnum
Winchester 94 30/30
Winchester 92 44/40
Winchester 94 .22lr
Winchester trapper 94 30/30
Marlin 44mag
Rossi (blued) 44mag
Rossi (SS) 44mag
Rossi (SS) .38/357
All were ''fun'' to use, but it was just a phase I went through. I would have shot a hundred or so deer/pigs between all those lever actions and the .38spl Rossi had well over 2000 goats to its name....but I now look back and laugh at myself for holding onto the those rifles for so long. The day I sold them all and went back to using a suppressed bolt action for general hunting was ''a moment of clarity'' and I've never looked back.

Kimjon , did you ever shoot deer with the 357 ?
Bumped into a hunter (stalked is probably the better word) in the Kaimais last weekend and he had a 3030 with a cut down barrel. Looked the bees knees.
Yes, but with mixed results.
I rarely used .357mag ammo in it, mainly using it with .38spl ammo. To get a bang-flop kill I found that it had to be an Atlas-joint shot. I only shot a handful of deer that I can remember with the .38spl. I do remember trying neck shots for a while, but with no shocking power I lost a few when I didn't hit bone, so gave up on it for that kind of hunting.

I reckon a marlin 30 30 would be ideal to take on the mountain bike. I quite often see the odd pig or stinky. the marlin is small handy and I think within a hundred meters it could deal to most stuff. putting a scope on it would be a waste of time and if that was the case you should do wot kj suggested and just carry bolt action with a can.
with this leverevolution ammo from hornady and a 20" barrel it is supposed to give the 30-30 a bit more range but would never under estimate it as a bush rifle
Had one for awhile. The Winchester Trapper. Wasn't that comfortable to shoot, especially having to squeeze the lever closed whist pulling the trigger. I guess just a case of multi tasking. Rattly and floppy bloody things as well
Far more deer have been shot in our bush with a 26" or so barrel 303 than a short barrel 30-30. So why aren't you clamoring to try one of them?
Both are a pile junk.
And Carlson's problem is that someone put him in a time machine that was facing the wrong direction. :D
We would but you cant get cheap FMJ amo any more :oh noes::oh noes:
I would if I could find a nice non-sporterised SMLE for sale. Don't want a No4.
Also Carlsen's problem is that it's spelt with an E.
I hunt in the uk with a marlin 336 in 3030 when in thick woods, where shots are under 100 mtrs, a Leopold m8 4x32 fits a dream, have had a e o tec on it, the point of balance is great for free hand shooting and a dream to carry in the hand compared to bolt actions, the new hornady ammo increases you range and hitting power, but I prefer Winchester silver tips.
I owned a Marlin 336 (? the one with str stock) 3030 and took plenty of pig and deer. Only sold it 'cos I was a little tired of beating up ammo through the tube mag when unloading. Yes all bush hunting, nice to carry and all under 150m.
If you go 3030 - get a decent hand load sorted, or winchester 150gn silver tips
that was my expereince anyway
They kill deer , And kill deer well...who gives a shit if a 308 will hit a deer faster...
Deer dont give a shit..
try the new leverlution rounds from Hornady makes the old girls shoot well out to 300.
I used a marlin 336 in Australia for pest eradication shooting, I have shot well into the thousands of animals. mostly pigs donkeys horses and the like.
they are far more useful than some here would indicate, remembering that semi auto firearms are illegal in oz, the lever is very useful for medium game out to 150m or so open sighted, or 300m with a short variable scope, 1x4 or 2x7 is heaps.
for bush shooting in the southland bush area where I now live, I have a marlin guide gun in 45.70. with a skinner peep. why?
not because it is the most practical cartridge, not because it is the flattest shooting, but because it works REALY WELL, and I enjoy it.
the reality is that bush shooting is quite a specialised type of hunt and the marlin lever is a very useful design, with the action closed you can see the rim of the cartridge in the action, useful to see if you have one up the spout.
also the exposed hammer allows the hunter to make use of the half cock position.
when I am in close and I am expecting a deer to pop out at any moment, I chamber a round and put the hammer in half cock, I then break the action to further prevent an AD.
if a shot presents I raise the rifle to the shoulder, as I aim, I close the lever and thumb the hammer to fully cocked, the action is swift and almost silent.
far quieter than chambering a round in a bolt action. yet still safe.
I am currently working on a suppressor for the guide gun, just, you know, for stealthy tacticoolness.

thanks greg good to hear
Hi Guys, it`s the same old story, what you have got is what you use for your type of hunting. I started with the old 303 , then moved up to a P/Hale standed in .308 for bush hunting and most shots are under 50 m. But I`m a lefty, with the right hand bolt I had to make the first shot count, nothing wrong with with the two of them. Have got a Marlin lever in .3030, 16" barrel with a 3x scope and it is very accurate and in the bush it is a great little gun , my first shot at a sika hind for meat , got her and a small spotty, the bullet had gone right through her and hit the spotty as well, I call it "Sudden Death" Ceers,Home brew.357.
I've recently purchased a Rossi 16" 44mag for the purpose of bush hunting deer. Haven't had the chance to fire a shot in anger yet.
However
They are plenty capable cartridges AS LONG as you stick to a sensible distance. Plenty of people have killed deer with .222's so no reason it wouldn't work with a 3030
When we bought our first house many things had to go towards a deposit, among them all my rifles apart from a .22
Once we were in I looked about for a rifle that was cheap and best bang for buck as it were
I bought a 30 30 Marlin
Don't let anybody tell you a scoped marlin 30 30 is light, it's handy but no lighter than a normal 7Lb+ rifle.
I shot hares, rabbits, wallaby, pigs [ but never a deer] with that rifle untill we were better fixed
It was an honest 1.5 to 1.8 moa rifle and at 2 and 3/4 inches high at 100 was good for about 6" low at 200 with factory Winchester 150gr power points.
One of those things that got sold on, wished I never had, and have never goteen round to buying another.
Marlin 30 30, cheap birch or similar stock, old Weaver 3x9
I was alot younger in this photo but absolutely nowhere near as good looking as I am now.
