Mmmm am I ruining a Friendship or starting one[/B].....

I have met a few good people on here and no more so than Mucko, he has been generously enough to let me shoot and hunt at his place I better kill something soon or the invitations to shoot/hunt my start slowing down and stop. Unless I actually kill something bloody soon ! Jeepers a possum will do at this dire stage!

While ever ones time is short these days in the fast paced lives we live . it leaves little time for hunting especially if your Mucko a Dairy Farmer with 4 kids under 5 yrs old (nope that wasn't a typo !)

So lets set the scene so far....

1st time spot lighting for pigs no pigs seen. ( Feral pigs rooting up the farm coming from the bush at the back of his place.)

2nd time spotlighting see 3 good size pigs I would say an honest 70-90 kgs ? Mmm 30 meters away , I put what I thought was a well placed shot to the shoulder. Now Im new to shooting and hunting and the few animals I have shoot have been on private land and has alway taken one shot to put it down. Imagine my shock that while the pig looked hit . i.e. it went off at a canter instead of a sprint like the other 2 pigs did in the vicinity it certainly wasn't dead ! So I thru some lead in the air, and thats exactly what it was, throwing some lead in the air!!! Needless to say Mr piggy escaped into the bush, we had a good look for him but he was gone.

3rd time up the back of his place in the bush.......friggin had to climb a bloody dam step hill ( high enough for telecom to put one of those radio mast thingies on top (yes Rushy that is the technical term) and other idiots jump off said hill with a wee bit of material and call it fun (para gliders etc).... Get on the ridge half way to the top around the next corner and blow me down theres a deer (hind) looking straight at us. Mucko was behind me and I didn't think he had seen it so I waved my hand like a bloody garla, obvious to much movement and the hind took off at a great rate of knots hence no shot taken.

4th time , i.e. next day Mucko was a wee tired after milking ( 4 kids , 3 am starts) hmm must be getting soft ! So I went up on my lonesome, imagine my shock 2 days in a row ,just on dark (evening) about 500m apart another deer appears a young yearling looking straight at me 100 meters away only offering a head shot. While Im not the greatest shot in the world. I thought I d give it a go, why I didn't go into a sitting firing position I will never know....Tried calming my breathing rate down took aim slowly squeeze the trigger..... Fire miss.... Bugger me the yearling hasn't bolted!!! Reload, f$#k it , it jams.... Im sure I saw the yearling smile as it slowly walks off into the bush...

5th time 2 days hunting in Horomanga River area.... mmm nice long walk in , lots of river crossing 46 each way, no much sign , no fresh sign. No sighting of deer... Enough said really.

Mmm is it me or the Rifle , is it the beginning of a friendship or the end of one....

So Mucko when ya free to go hunting again, 6th time lucky Ha, Ha!

In closing I guess if it was easy they would call it shopping not hunting. And nope Im not giving away the rifle just yet!

I'd shoot some paper and make sure the rifle is shooting where you point it, had mine 3" out at 100m after a knock on the scope once!

Think you need to be carefull around mucko... 4 kids in 4 years sounds like it may be contagious (spelling?)

Bloody hell Mohawk that is a hard luck story. I have never owned a 308 but would have thought that even if you hit a boar in the shoulder plate it wouldn't survive the experience (could well be wrong about that through as I don't know the calibre or the sort of projectile you are using). When was the last time you zeroed that cannon of yours?

Your seeing animals and that is the hard bit, you will break the drought soon no doubt and wonder what all the fuss was about;)

You not having much fun Mohawk but a couple of points.A boar 70-90kg probably has a shield over his shoulders to get threw but at 30 meters a pill behind the ear is most like a better option or behind the leg in the engine room. But 3 pigs that size I'd be a little excited too.
Head shooting a deer at 100m off hand ,not easy either.Looking straight at you its not a very big target ,I'd be inclined to sit tight & wait for a clean shot .All easy said in hind sight aye but don't be too hard on your self is all part of the learning curve.
Horomanga is nice water shed ,did you try hunting the true left 1/2 way between Midway & Poplars .Round Red creek was a bit thick & shity as I recall. Are the flats still covered in grass ,well it is spring & should be some animals moving on the fresh growth.

Nice Stag there Chris! Going up the river I had a go at hunting the first stream on the right from the hut. There was sum sign but none of it fresh. Yep and the flats are covered in grass. Yep and in hindsight probably going for a shoulder shot on a pig was a silly idea, bit of rush of blood to the head on my part. Yep waiting for a better shot on the hind instead of going for a head shoot would have been a better move , all a learning curve. Little hard not to pull the trigger, guess it all comes down to experience and patience something I am lacking in ! Thanks for the advice.

Mmm yep you may be right Im guessing it wouldn't take too much to throw out a scope and it has done a lot of rattling around in the back of my ute, and bush crashing....

All the best mate you'll get there no doubts ,if it any consolation my mate put a 308 round in what looked like a 80 plus kg porker, the slug i reckon hit the shield it didnt flinch just kept running we heard the hit it ran straight into a wire fence broke the wires it hit clean haha never seen the pig again, that was above lake Taupo western side ,there were some big poaka's in the reserves around the lake ..

Gees Buddy you brought a tear to my eye, i have to set up trail cam tomorrow so will head up top for a hunt i better bloody get something thats for sure, nothing wrong with your rifle bro. you forgot to mention the place had been scented out by 6 other people 6 dogs and 4 horses and a pajero emitting herbel mist before we even got there, if the weather hadnt gone bad we would have had the place to our selfs for a couple of hunts had been able to work the sign more and pinned down where the buggers where hiding. but time was against us due to the weather system that was coming

As you can see plenty of tucker on the clearings. good flat walking track, was hard to find in places would get water proof socks before the next trip in there. then find out Mowhawks hunting spot infact was not hit with 1080 doc had mixed up the hut names, who knows what could of happen, credit to the locals for not ripping off the ute good to see it in one piece.:ninj:

Thanks for that Mucko. I am really pissed that I missed the walk. There has to be deer in there and they would certainly relish that spring growth that can be seen in the first photo.

we have had early growth this year but the hinds are still gestating so not ready to change diet just yet that i think is why we are seeing all the growth and not the deer on the clearings i did see fern browsing and lots of fresh five finger growth, i am picking once the hinds drop then they will rip in to the grass to get the milk going, we did encounter about 5 carcasses seams that the locals using horses and dogs are fulling their frezzers.

The young spikers should have almost been pushed away by the hinds by now as the first of them should start birthing in 3 - 4 weeks. That is always a good time to catch up with them as having never been without the guidance of mum they are not as wise as older animals.

Any fresh sign seen was transient going from ridge to ridge not stopping to graze perhaps stopping for a drink. none of the carcasses found where Spikers. found a 8 pointer near the hut my nephew wanted to take it home i said i was not going to mess with a decomposing carcases.:burnt:

I also suggest you go and check the sighting of your scope and do it on the 100 board will give you a better idea where you bullets are going out to those distances.

Trout rod might be worth taking along too.
If the deer aren't moving on the grass yet probably still on the Mahoe ,seem to love it early spring.

Try it in mid winter ,sneakers ,wet feet ,haw frost not funny.
I remember some nice open terraces on true left above the flats down stream from Midway towards the Forks hut might be worth a sneak threw depending on wind direction.

I can relate to both storys on here 4 kids check! not as rapid as muko ( hes a rootbag by the sounds:thumbsup:) time poor check! seen deer and missed yep did that once or two time max.Im not trying to insult you mowhawk but if you check your rifle an its a ok try noticing if you flinch? or get someone to watch you take a shot.Ive missed to deer and both times were my error,first shot was a standing shot 150m and i was blowing hard as i just got to the top of a big hill and my mate said there gonna bolt so i pulled and shot under,second was a sitting shot unsupportd 270m and i didnt no my hold over i just pluked and missed.that was rite at the beginning of my early hunting which isnt long ago.but i got into more target practice and putting plenty rounds down range and even not long ago bought some of Shootms plates and they help out heaps.like its been said your already onto deer you just gotta hit em:thumbsup:Ive rolled plenty of zeros on my walks but there getting less now thanks in part to this forum.good luck mate.
