Just after some info - got a teens trip into Atiwhakatu Hut for a weekend nearing end of November.
It it worth taking the rifle into this area to amuse myself during the mornings?

You will gain very little by leaving it behind, the track is graded and stepped for its entirety, there aren't any places where you need to use hand holds except for one swingbridge and maybe one slip, so not really a hassle to carry it.
Carry on up the Atihwakatu stream past the hut and things get a bit more remote, or if you want a good cardio workout, head up toward Jumbo hut, sometimes see one or two on the bush edge of the tussock.
The walk into Atiwhakatu is probably the easiest route in the Taras There is a lot of traffic over weekends.
If you take a rifle, have a look in the area SW of the East Holdsworth Track, there are some nice shelves next to Holdsworth Creek.
