Thread: Auckland/Waikato/BOP hunters looking to get their first deer

Now is the time to hit the northern Kaimais. I’m talking Thompson’s Track to Cashmore’s Clearing and everywhere in between.
I embarked on a spur of the moment evening hunt yesterday, and saw a couple despite the 75km/hr crosswinds and low cloud. There was HEAPS of sign up high, and you can see a long way in a lot of these spots, enabling you to cover a lot more ground than you would bush hunting. The deer I saw were 500m off, and it was so windy that I couldn’t even hold the scope on them to glass them. By the time I’d closed the gap they’d gone back into the bush. If you can get a clear and relatively still day up here, the deer are out in big numbers, there’s heaps of feed. If you look at this area on google earth you’ll see that there are literally hundreds of slips, clearings and gullies leading of the main ridge, the deer are hitting these now at first and last light.

Geat motivation to get out there, need to fix a few things first like my farkin body, but considering I look at the hill from the kitchen windows....

Did you stay in any huts, and were there any trampers up there?

I was in and out same day. Saw one hiker heading out. Passed Te Rereatukahia, no one in residence. I walked out in the dark, never realised there were so many glow worms up there. More hoof prints than boot prints on the tracks.

You never see info posted up like this. So all i can stay is a @tanqueray. So new hunters wanting to get there first deer in live in that area get in to it and be safe. Info and opportunities don't just come up like this

They will have to draw straws for first shot, the others that already know this spot x will be pleased.

Don’t be pathetic. I didn’t mention any “spot x”, I mentioned a stretch of the Kaimais about 10km long, 1/7th of the total range. But then again you probably didn’t read the whole first post, you just came to have a moan.

Good Stuff anybody willing to hunt that country deserves a deer, the open country looks inviting alright but the bush can be challenging in a lot of areas. Good luck to all that have a go.

Did read your post, didn't come to moan, I don't hunt the area so nothing lost to me. I hope hunters that need a hand benefit from your advice.

Looks a lot different to the kaimais I’m used to hunting around wairere falls area,60m is a looong shot in there.
