An Australian wants to hunt in New Zealand

    Hi,

I am very eager to go on a hunting/fishing/trapping trek through New Zealand. The region I have been looking at is the Mt Aspiring National Park, north west of Lake Wanaka on the Southern Island. I have my own rifles which I would like to bring, a South Australian firearms license, and experience in hunting and trekking.

My real question is in regards to attaining the permits/licenses needed for me to be able to embark on my desired trek. If anyone (especially someone with past experience who has done what I am keen to do) has any advice/knowledge they may impart on me it would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to email me aswell on martinwojtyna01@hotmail.com.

    Cheers

The permit side is easy enough. Go to the doc website and, look here's the link. Hunting permit: Permits and licences Permits are online now and you should be able to get that sorted before you even leave Aus (please don't bring any shelia's over, we can't stand the noise)

Getting your NZ license and DOC permits are a piece of piss, the shit part is getting your guns out and back in to Australia. You will note the NZ side of customs treat you like a normal human being while the Australian side will treat you like a criminal, man I love my arsehole country.

Where about's in SA are you from? You a fallow hunter mostly?

Yeah, I'm from Adelaide but only recently moved down here, gone shooting once in rural SA at a mates property for goats. I used to go hunting heaps out bush on properties in NT for buff and pigs, but haven't really had to opportunity to go on a decent long hunting trip, and from what I've heard about New Zealand apparently its the place to go for an awesome hunting/fishing trip.

I just applied for the permits which I received immediately free of charge (which I cant believe seeing in Australia you have to pay for every single permit for anything), but if I already have a South Australian firearms license, do I need to apply for a New Zealand firearms license aswell or can I go hunting with my license?

Ah yeh, well buff aint bad, love to get up on them one day myself.
SA has some good hunting, I do a fair bit there and my guiding is in SA.

You will need a NZ license but its only $25 and they're very lenient. Just make sure you have the bolt out of your gun, they like that.

You've heard right though, its a beautiful place, the people are a lot nicer than aussies and the hunting is very good.

Need any more help just pm me, happy to help.

    BH
