Basspro & Cabelas - Phoenix, Arizona

How can gun city claim to be the largest with those sort of amazing shops around
-
Thanks for sharing the photos. Brings back good memories.
Did the same a few years back when I was stuck in Southern CA for work over a weekend - drove to Phoenix Az to the same stores.

I believe it is because they are specifically a gun store and their space dedicated to firearms is bigger than any others? Cabellas and Bass pro are sports stores rather than gunshops. Bass pro looks like it has a H&F feel to it , but it looks like they succeeded at what they were trying to do and H&F are trying to copy the big boys.....but without the budget or taste.

or, most importantly, expertise

Well unfortunately Bass Pro bought out Cabelas and is running it into the ground. Bass Pro has a lot of cheaper clothing lines and similar things and has gradually assimilated Cabelas with more junk on the shelves. Cabelas with some of their own store labeled brands had some very hard wearing, durable clothes and their stuff overall was more suited to real outdoorsman, while Bass Pro has been more for the fisherman and pseudo city slicker I want to look like a cool outdoorsman thing. Bass Pro is also not as big on firearms as the old Cabelas was, so for instance the one Cabelas I visit frequently, they cut the firearms section in half and replaced it with pink camo and junk for kids.
Still, the big mega store Cabelas(there are some smaller size Cabelas out there) they are worth a visit if you happen to be passing by. At the big Cabelas they are pretty good about having a well stocked reloading section and lots of ammo. However everything at these stores is more high retail price so one thing I do is often you can get discounted E-gift cards online which will save you 10-20%.

And there was also once Gander Mountain chain stores, but these closed a few years ago... i got a lot of bargins from them, and actually preferred some of the lines they carried over Cabela's and Bass Pro...

Good lord
Fantastic job with pics
Were you Bankrupt once you left :-)
See Ammo just on open shelf/isles

The one on Memphis has live gators in the pond!
I was there during game bird season and the different types of decoys, calls, hides and other shit was a site to behold.
Even Mrs IMaca likes going to them. We went back to the Memphis store in the evening to have dinner as our AirBnB was just around the corner

i have been to 3 bass pro/cabellas and the stores are amazing but the firearms section is nowhere near the same size as GC christchurch. however the range of what they sell is amazing, from a single fishing lure thru power boats, skidoo's, ATV's etc

I find that if I go into one without a list I come out empty handed. Too big, too much stuff it can be a mind fu**!

Great pix. Yeah, at Bass Pro in Vegas I just wandered around with my jaw on the ground, it was just incredible. Twice a day they threw in a line and hooked a bass in the indoor pool which was almost identical to those pix, and released it.
“Where you from hun? I can tell you’re not from around here. We can ship anything you like to wherever you live...”

You have to love the land where you shop at a gunshop with a shopping trolley.
I only half filled mine before my debit card hemorrhaged, my credit card cried and i felt dizzy.
Great photos

They are amazing alright. I lived in Missouri for 3 years and often went to Basspro in Springfield. I agree that Cabelas is better - the St Louis one was superb. 10% military discount for me there too.
Lots of pretty crappy stuff and own brand rubbish in Basspro, so huge as they are, much of it isn’t great. I guess the gun and ammo sections are now sold out as Americans panic buy because zombies, government coming to get me, Chinese, etc. Even after 3 years I never got used to how weird mid-west Americans can be.

I work out of state in a rural area and sometimes if I need a break I drive about an hour away to a city which has a Cabelas for relaxation. They have big comfy chairs in front of a fireplace in the front and I usually take a nap for a while, then get a cart and meander all over the store like a drunken sailor with a shopping cart, always ending up in the reloading section looking for the odd thing I do not have. A lot of their stuff is priced high retail but they always have something on sale and they always have discounted 9mm ammo of some brand, at $8.99 plus 20% off with E-gift card you can't lose.

The FBI processed 3.7 million background checks last month, add in other states like Pennsylvania that have their own system and probably over 4 million guns were sold last month.

They are impressive alright. I worked at the Bass Pro in Calgary, Alberta, Canada all of 2010 while living abroad. Was amazing the number of people that came through some days (7-10k on weekend days).
I was a shift manager/lead in the hunting department and it wouldn't be unusual to sell 75-100 firearms a day during good sales. There would be 5-10 pellets of gear on the floor each morning to restock the shelves after the day previous (just for hunting, shooting, reloading kit, not even hunting clothing). Next level compared to NZ.
Agree that Cabelas was better for hunting and shooting gear.

Americans certainly don't do things by halves.

Awesome stores for sure. I’ve been to some of the smaller ones in Anchorage and they still blow you away with how big they are. The taxidermy is really impressive too.

When Obama took office for the first time he was single handedly the best for promoting the buying of guns/ammo as the US went nuts and companies were pumping out as much as they could to keep up with their domestic demand it was hard for them to keep up with international demand... walking into Serious Shooters or Reloader Supplies and seeing their shelves half empty was a result of that.
I wonder what the ripple effect of this covid will cause in the states with gun/ammo sales and the effect it will have with supplies reaching our shores.

Wow great photos just like Disneyland for the outdoorsman in you!

Agreed that we have it pretty good here. In the UK where there are about 2 million shotgun and firearm licence holders, the gun shops are almost all pokey little, cramped shit boxes with almost no stock. The better ones almost all cater for shooting clothing and there’s not much in terms of reloading. Reloading Solutions are a good crew but their shop is about 40 square metres in size.
