Belt or bino pouch for emergency kit?

Just been reading through a few of the horror stories of injuries/emergencies that have popped up in a few previous threads and think its time to sort some emergency kit out before something happens. Thinking of getting a belt with a zip-pouch or upgrade binoharness for emergency gear to keep my emergency gear always on me (like PLB, lighter, few rounds etc.)

Thoughts/recommendations on bino harness vs belt for this? I'm usually doing 2-3 day missions in the tops around Canterbury/otago/west coast.
One concern is that a belt could interfere with my pack hip belt? Is this normally an issue? Thinking of kitting out a bono-harness for that reason. Currently have the stock vortex one which isn't much good for anything other than bino's

Also, if anyone has second-hand of either of the above, I would be keen, especially if Chch based. - chur

What about something like this, dare I say it the Duley clan use something similar...on TM at mo but if keen can withdraw and sell to you $20.plus postage

Cheers for that but prefer a chest bino pouch as that's just what I am used to. I understand there are a few higher quality bino pouches with a bit more storage and more sturdy than my vortex one

You can add pouches to the Vortex harness. I've added one on each side for rangefinder and another for phone/GPS.

That is a great idea i will borrow that and make myself a kit too.

I'd suggest throwing in a emergency thermal blanket in somewhere if you haven't already considered it. Take up f@ck all space tucked down beside something else but outside of first aid/plb probably one of the best for weight items in a pinch. Even if only to minimize shock

I'm doing the exact same thing(setting up a better emergency kit) after recent posts. i just bought my first harness recently (H.E. Defender 'magnum'). i usually just run a hydration pack when stalking from basecamp but this weekend i'll be trialling the bino harness/hydration pack combo. what's become clear is your gear can get ripped off in a tumble so i think having key stuff tucked in close to your chest (where your arms help protect you) could be good. I'm thinking a compact first aid pouch off one side of the main pouch that won't interfere with my rifle shoulder/pack straps/sling etc.. after a bit of shuffling my gear around i think could've gone for a harness with more capacity/compartments & get it all into one tidy unit. a new PLB is next on my list. safe hunting peoples

What brand / model of PLB have you got? I may have a pouch to suit it.

I run a pouch on my belt for this purpose. I have been out and tested it by spending two nights from it. I have various stuff in there, probably more than most would,but other than the normal stuff I definitely recommend a shock blanket, and a pvc bag (sort of like a pack liner but folds up to palm size) as well as a couple of muesli bars to keep you going (if you have room). Also I can’t stress the importance of having a good whistle, not all are the same and some will be heard kilometres away while others only a few hundred meters, despite sounding a similar volume when blown. The Fox40 is the whistle used by LANDSAR teams and it’s cheap from rebel sport. My belt doesn’t interfere with my pack too much as my hip straps are up higher on my particular pack and my belt can sit lower underneath it.

& to the OP.. the HE magnum is low profile which i like. i have an 8x56 bino in the main compartment & a Rino in the right pouch & it's an easy 1 handed operation to slide either out, but add a samsung mobile on the opposite side pouch & it all gets too tight. i will add a pouch like MB above on the left side for emegency kit & plb.
there's an oz review that complains of the stretchy waist bands not strong/secure enough & the pouch flopping around, i just cut some plastic buckles off an old hydration pack & secured the tag ends & that fixed those problems plus doubled up the strength so no floppy bizzo this side of the ditch eh..:P see pics

even if it just holds PLB because you will get rescued within a few hours because they will know where you are

I pretty much only hunt bush so do have much requirement for bino harness.

This is my new setup with Manitoba Expedition Bino pouch and an older model TwinNeedle PLB pouch on the side. In the front pocket of bino harness i have: pain killers, lighter, old bike tyre for fire starter, emergency blanket, israeli bandage, knife and couple round of my calibre.

Could you please elaborate on your considerations in choosing the Manitoba over other similar bino/chest packs.

I just have a pouch full of kit that lives in the bottom of my pack.

Yea mate sure. The Manitoba one had a built in front pocket (where my lighter etc is in the pic). Lots of others dont have a designated separate pocket for other goods. Plus it was reasonably priced (compared to Twin Needle etc). Also has other sweet features like the magnetic flip top, in-built raincover, and in-built lens cleaning cloth
