Pack and Rifle = Phillip Holden Deer Were Their Lives = Dick Wright Shooting For The Skipper = Jack McNair A Sea Of Gold = Lew Sutherland True Hunting Adventures = Rex Forrester The Deer Cullers = Hans Willems. Many, many, winters past I read a book about some bloke who was dead keen on the hunting lark and wrote a book about it. Hardly stopped grinning since. I often thought the bloke should be a legend and have a public holiday awarded in his honour.

You’ll Learn no Harm from the Hills by Newton McConochie. Great read and superb photos.

Well written (old skool) prose - for those of you who have a hankering for such things.

Another vote for Dave Ratcliffe's 'An Era Gone' plus 'Hunting On Sacred Ground'.

I'm always reading a hunting book or two,

For the best any of Jim Corbett's are absolute treasures. People getting into hunting should just about be made to read Jungle Lore to gain an appreciation for the bush and the animals.

Nz - Of mountains men and deer by brian burden or deer at my doorstep by colin Davey.

Australia - hell west and crooked - tom cole

Africa - no more the tusker - george rushby (my favourite after jim corbett's work).

USA- Sand county almanac - aldo leopold.

Non hunting, big game - twilight of the mammoth.

Worst books - hunter climb high - keith severinson and death in the long grass - peter capstick. Both full of themselves and full of shit.

I have Keith Severison and Philip Holdens books and like them.
Can relate to them especially if you have been to some of the places where they hunted.

Each year there is another thread on this topic so a forum search will yield several good reading lists.

    Historical
Mike Bennett " the venison hunters"
Graeme caughley " the deer wars"

    Yarns
Philip Holden "pack and rifle" "hunter by profession"

    Not yet a classic
Nathan foster "practical guide to long range shooting" ebook

    Hilarious and classic NZ literature
Barry Crump " a good keen man"

    Shooting technique (1970s)
Matt and Bruce grant "the sharp shooter"

    Plus several liked above.
