What’s the best magnum caliber for NZ game
What’s the best magnum caliber for NZ game
Lol
Ok I'll start, 7mm rem mag.
I've only used three with them being:
- .300 Win Mag I had to use with a muzzle brake and was a heavy rifle for long range.
- .338 Win Mag was a mates gun and just kicked too much.
- 7mm Rem Mag was a Tikka T3 which came on numerous trips and "ruled with authority" so if I ever went back to a magnum it would be another 7mm Rem Mag but I'm a sook when it comes to recoil hence why I love my .222, .223, .243, 7mm-08, .284 Win which is enough for everything we have in NZ
Have a tikka t3 300 win mag with a t3 terminator brake on it. Very nice to shoot. Lets just say nothing runs away but not ideal for meat hunting
7mm rem mag, is there anything that compares? Have your pick of factory rifles, ammo
Any of the 30cal magnums.
300WinMag, it's a 30 06 on steroids , but I like them all.
PI Magnum
My Rossi 44 mag ...wanna buy it

I have owned a few but never used any on game, except for my .44 Magnum which has accounted for a few animals. Frankly, there is no reasonable reason for any of the medium or big bore magnums in NZ. The animals aren't big enough and the ranges aren't long enough. My only current magnum is my .338 LM which is only for targets anyway. I have hunted with a .30/06 for years and that is probably more power than was ever needed. 7-08 and .308 are about perfect for NZ (and all the Tahr I have shot have been with a .308).
7mm rem mag would be the most popular.
