    Between eyes or ears

Was asked tonight to drop a pet pig as it is showing signs of old age and owner needs it to be done humanely as leased land from council. It is a big old thing and will probably be dumped down offal pit
22 is out of the equation yet to decide if it will be .308 6.5x55 or 7.62x39

Anyway is it best between eyes, between ears or imaginary lines crossing from eyes to ears?
Have not done one this close and would rather give it an 80m head start but that won't happen

Slightly higher than between the eyes. The imaginary x between the eyes and ears that you described. Done it many times.

If you get the angle wrong (shooting down) between the eyes the wound just goes through the nasal tissues and under the brain cavity. Done that too with a .22 and its not nice. Terrible way to learn.

You will be ok with a big gun as you propose.

Simple answer is 12G they are great for that stuff N04 or less ,buck or slug iv shot many things no one wants to shoot but someone has to do it rabbits to horses , 12g is solid ..22 unless you are putting barrel to head side shots below the ear, any cal above that it wont matter to much.

That's soup for a big village in some places in the world.

My vote is for x39 between eyes, aiming for brain stem behind, if that makes sense. Off button for any mammal. It'll end up in the going through a ton of important shit after too.

Had to put one of the horses down last year, 170gn flat nose at about 6" through the temple and into the brain, straight down, still managed to feel guilty about being practical and taking her winter cover off before doing it though. The old girl looked at me and I swear she knew what was up and tried to show she was all good. Nearly couldn't do it.

.22 will do fine if you know what youre doing. Shot plenty of cows, pigs, sheep with .22.

If you want to know if the animal died instantly touch its eye. If it doesnt twitch then it out. If it twitches then its still dieing.

I prefer bigger over smaller. It's not fun being slightly off and having to chase it down with 22. Watched a home kill fella do that. I ran inside and got the 270 and dropped it across the paddock. Have seen them move their head at the moment trigger pulled as well. Same deal, have to chase a pissed off animal

general rule front shots are crap , heads are tilted to all sorts of angles , rifles sighted to different ranges so unless this is something you are confident with side shots or 12g ...some reason people think there is going to be a great mess with a 12g well this is not true can pretty much stick a barrel to a head & big hole in the size of a 20c but nothing out ..12g is the go to on the home kill front , don't have to worry about a bullet poping out the other side etc etc
