A red hind i shot recently had black lumps under the skin above the tail bone. I have never seen this before. Anyone have any idea what this could be?

Every deer has them as far as Ive seem. Some sort of gland.
Yep. They all have them.
Get to know the bits you DO need to check regarding the animal's health: lungs, liver, lymph glands etc etc. plenty of assistance in google land.....and on here:thumbsup:
If I'm looking at that the right way, that gland is part of the tail. Not sure what it's purpose is for the deer, but it's the bit that's desired by the Asian Market.
Probably scent glands at a guess.
Welcome to the forum
scent glands also known as " come and get it big boy"
Called the Tarsal glands , where all the scent comes from No need to cut them out asap but if you touch them then wash your hands as they contain a LOT of bacteria and you really dont want it spread around the carcase.
