    Just a word if caution.
A 45 is a small caliber and doesn't carry the energy some might think.
I shoot a 50 cal Flintlock and a 50 cal ball is only 180 grains. Travelling at sub 1500fps (which I'm guessing at as I haven't worked out how to get my Lab to track it) it's in my opinion at the lower end of the energy scale required for big animals.
I agree, I use a 54 with 230gr balls as standard but I’m having a custom 58 that shoots 270gr balls built. I also have my 62 fusil that shoots a 320gr (I think) ball, it’s a smoothy and I haven’t taken deer with it yet.

Having said that, I talk to a lot of guys in the states and more than one have cleanly taken elk with a 45, like anything it’s all about shot placement.

I still prefer hard punch and shot placement though
7mmwsm and Micky Duck like this.
